Contemporary Issues in Graduate School!


Michael Ho

- Art Education!
background: Houston, TX!
- Junior/senior high school fell in love with art!
- got scholarship for an art school for the summer after junior year and went!
- didn't go to art school because he failed art class in community college!
- finished bachelor of fine arts in painting at Univ of Houston!
- flirted with other mediums!
couldn't really do art after bachelors because he got muscular dystrophy!
after disease, became an art educator as a way to survive!
chose art because he loved it, chose art education because he fell into it!
was content teaching art, but went back to grad school to learn more about art
education!

wanted to become a Grad school art educator so he could learn more about what
he was doing, also wanted accreditation for what he was already doing!

soul searching!
became interested in people who conducted artistic forms of research!
creating identity within artistic mediums!
artist/researcher/teacher is an identity and a way of doing things!

- Metals!
MFA is a graduate degree requiring 2-3 years after a BFA!
studio arts MFA is a terminal degree and puts focus on the studio practice rather
than research!

MFAs are stressful, but love what they do!


time management is a huge thing in MFAs!
research of objects (house objects)!
- focus on memories!
- research things that we save, not for their use but for their sentimental and
memorial value!

- reading, making things, writing, constant critiques
