Introduction Essay

PhilArts 1 – G

Good day! My name is Ann Margareth Z. Macasio, but you can just call me Ann. I am a

first year BS Architecture student and is currently residing in Kidapawan City. I graduated from

Kidapawan City National High School. I chose Architecture as my career because of my interest

in drawing/sketching, but it was quite a challenge drawing with specific measurements to follow.

Unlike most people who have chosen this course with the same reason, I have been only drawing

portraits and many other things, but not buildings. I had tried designing houses before but I

didn’t continue, it was hard trying to choose which goes where. Even after learning Architectural

Design, there was still more to learn and I am looking forward to it. Entering college, it was a

little difficult considering the situation we are in, learning became harder as I consider myself a

visual learner. Still, I am looking forward learning something new, especially in Philippine Arts

and Culture. Though I have little knowledge with kind of things because I find it hard to put in

memory, unlike other subject or courses. I have yet to engage myself more in Philippine culture

and the arts made by the people of our country.

Studying Philippine Arts and Culture, I want to widen my knowledge about arts and how

it relates to everyday life and culture of Filipinos. I am hoping this course will help broaden my

views on art and its context. I want to be able to understand what people wants to express

through their art and how it represents our culture and society. I want to engage myself more in

the society with the help of expressing myself through art. As an individual, I want to reflect on

the contribution of art to our culture, in a local and even in a global context. I want to be able to

learn about our cultural history through the art of the people. I also want to be able to view the

art and culture of the Philippines in critical viewpoint. As a student, studying Philippine Arts and
Culture may help me incorporate in my designs what I’ve learn from these course. I may be able

to approach Design in a cultural perspective, and accustom my designs in a contemporary style.

As a citizen of this country, it’s very significant learning about what makes us who we are. It

encourages dedication towards our country’s culture. It’ll help enlighten me, a citizen, of our

cultural history through arts. Of how people can view these arts from a different perspective and

approaches but comes to one understanding of what our culture and history is.

Considering all of these, I think studying Philippine Arts and Culture will help me

understand more about our culture and history from an art’s viewpoint, putting in mind different

societal context. This will also help me broaden my designs and incorporate more of something

close to home, and that is our culture and history. I am looking forward in learning and

understanding this course with ease, and that the faculty/professor will be also easy to approach.
