School Uniforms:

Required in all schools

By: Vianah Alysha Solis

School Uniforms should be required in all schools, private and public.

In the United States of America there
are about nineteen percent of public school
principals reported requiring uniforms in the
2009-2010 school year, up from twelve
percent a decade earlier. The percentage of
public schools whose principals reported

enforcement of a strict dress code rose from

forty-seven to fifty-seven percent during the
decade.
In the United States of America there
are about 49.2 percent of private schools that
require uniforms and 70.8 percent enforce
dress codes.
I attend a public school where uniform
were required until high school. In
elementary school, I had hand me down
uniforms and Walmart brand uniforms. They
sold at a cost where my parents were able to
buy six different sets for both my brothers
and myself. When I went on to middle

school, the original uniform had changed to

better suit the middle school you attended.
There was Canutillo Middle School and
Alderete Middle School. The uniforms and
colors differed from each other. CMS was
orange, blue, and white, while AMS was
orange silver and white. Even the mascots
were different, CMS was the original eagle
like CISD has always been, but AMS
adopted the American Eagle as our
mascot. Well in 2005-2006 school year, my
parents had to purchase uniforms directly
from the school. At the time both my brother
were in high school and my mother was is
college, so we did not have much money. If I
remember correctly the cost of the uniforms
t-shirts were from $8-$10.00. My mom had
bought me a total of three shirts and told me
when she had more money we would buy
more shirts for me for the next two years as
well.

I believe there should by school

uniforms for public and private schools. The
only thing I would change is for schools to
allow parents to purchase their childrens
uniforms in general stores and schools sell
patches or iron on logos, that way parents
can save more money and the schools will
still be able to make money as well.
Nowadays schools base pricing on the
7-14 size range, as these are the most
common sizes. Classroom manufacturers
uniforms in all sizes ranging from pre-school
to young men's and juniors, including husky
and plus. The cost benefits that the school
year outfits priced around $100.00 to
$150.00. There are general stores that sell
uniforms for a less price, but most schools
do not all uniforms to be bought from stores.
These are examples of stores that sell
uniforms, Target sells uniforms starting at
$10.00, depending on the clothing, Old Navy
sells uniforms from $5 to $28.00, and WalMart sells uniforms starting at $4.00 to
$9.00. In my opinion, these prices are good
compared to the prices of uniforms that
schools sell them for.
I understand schools that sell uniforms
want to make money for the school, well
there are other ways. When I was in
elementary, the school provided fundraisers
to make money and depending on how much
money you made you were rewarded prizes
depending on the range of money you
collected. They would also sell candy and
have afterschool booths to sell popcorn, hot
Cheetos with cheese, chips, sodas, and all
kinds of goodies to make money. They
would have regular dances and sell the
tickets. They would sell wrist bands to have

free dress days, which made a lot of money

since everyone wanted to wear jeans. These
are suggestions that other schools can use
instead of selling uniforms to parents who
cant afford to buy a lot of. I spoke to one of
my co-workers who was frustrated that the
school her kids were attending were out of
their size. I believe that is ridiculous due to
the fact that the school should know how
many children are attending.
That would be my policy
change, to offer schools a way to help
parents and themselves to require school
uniforms. In order to help them, they can let
parents purchase uniforms from generic
stores and schools selling logos and
recommending what color to buy, saving
parents money and making money at the
same time.
