The children identify different shapes and the names of those shapes, which
develops their mathematical thinking (early geometry). The children practice spatial
perception and how they organize spatial relationships. They will develop their
shape identification, geometry skills and creativity.
EYLF Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators Children engage in a range
of texts and gain meaning from these texts.
NQS: Areas 1, 3, 5

Requirements/resources:
Tangram templates (1 per child)
Scissors
Tangram models
Facilitation/Implementation:
Show the children the tangram template before and after cutting into the different
shapes.
Hand them the templates and identify together some of the shapes.
Instruct them to cut the pieces and create new shapes, real or imagined.
Some of the questions to ask while they create:
Can you make a rectangle?
Can you make a square with the triangles?
Can you make an animal out of the shapes?
Can you make a monster out of the shapes? What is your monster's name?
Can you build a house out of the shapes? Who lives in that house? What
shapes did you use to build the house?
As an alternative, give them the Tangram puzzle pages as a challenge.
