4.3

MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP

4.3.1

Concrete Works
All materials used for the concrete works stated herein shall comply with
the General Concrete Specification where applicable and the requirements
specified herein.

4.3.2

Open Drains
Open surface drains shall be constructed of precast concrete drain channels
of concrete Class 'B' and to the dimensions as shown on the drawings. The
invert units shall be to B.S.340 and shall be cured for a minimum of 28
days before being laid. The sections shall be in 60 cm. lengths with a
minimum thickness of 50 mm. true to required shapes, sizes and
dimensions and have smooth internal faces. No rendering on the inside
faces will be allowed.

4.3.3

Laying of invert sections


The invert units shall be laid true to line and levels and shall be properly
jointed in 1:3 cement/sand mortar with 10 mm. wide joints. All joints
found to be damaged during the period of maintenance shall be replaced by
the contractor at his expense.

4.3.4

Scupper Drains
Scupper drains where required at openings in the roadside kerbs shall be
constructed with base slabs and side walls in situ reinforced concrete slabs of
precast concrete, all of concrete Class 'B'.

4.3.5

Laying Of Scupper Drains


The drains shall be constructed to the dimensions, lines, levels and falls
required with smooth internal faces. The covered slabs shall be cured for a
minimum of 28 days before being laid and properly jointed in 1:3 cement
sand mortar with 10 mm. wide joints.

4.3.6

Underground Drainage Pipes


Underground drainage pipes shall be of reinforced spun concrete with
strength requirements in accordance with B.S.556 and shall be of Hume's
Class 'X' with Class 'Y' pipes for road crossings and Class 'Z' pipes for rail
crossings or other equal and approved manufacture.
