Old School Old School will focus on the old school mechanics of writing; including
spelling, sentence structure, grammar, and usage. Practicing the mechanics of writing
is an excellent way to help improve students day-to-day writing. Old School
assignments will be handed out during the last class of the week (Thursday or Friday)
and will be completed during Learning Center time on Monday. They are DUE at the
beginning of class on Monday (2:15). If there is no school on a Monday, no Old
School assignment will be given. Specific DUE dates are listed on course timeline.
This portion of the course will be worth 10% of the term mark.

Project Work Students will complete 4 major projects, 2 in each term. These projects
integrate a variety of learning outcomes for English 9. Projects will be completed during
the 3 hours of set class each week on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Students will have
the opportunity to work individually and within groups. Students are expected to use
class time effectively so that projects are completed by the due dates. Specific DUE
dates are listed on course timeline. Project work will be worth 50% of term mark.
Dream Word 2.0 A portion of the English 9 coursework will be completed by
participating in an alternative reality game. This work will be completed during Learning
Centers on Tuesday and Wednesday, each week. We will investigate a wide range of
different stories, articles, poetry and essays. Students will work on organization,
evidence, mechanics and style as they continue to explore narrative, descriptive,
expository, and persuasive texts. Students will follow the step-by-step procedures to
complete each quest. Students will achieve a maximum of 6 Experience Points(XP), as
determined by the Game Master(GM), for each quest. The Game Master will assess
each quest to determine if it has been completed and to decide the number of XP that
has been earned. Quests can be redone and resubmitted to the GM to attain a greater
number of XP. Upon successful completion of an assignment, students will receive a
valuable hint that can be used on the final exam. Once enough XP has been achieved,
you will receive a level bonus. After Level 4, the levels correspond directly with letter
grades. For this portion of the course, students will receive a cumulative grade worth
40% of their term mark. Students will have the ability to track their progress throughout
the term. Dream Word assignments are DUE at the beginning of the last class each
week. Specific DUE dates are listed on course timeline.
Reading for Pleasure Each week students need to make time for 60 minutes of
silent reading. Reading for pleasure includes; Novels, Non-fiction, graphic novels,
comics, instruction manuals, newspapers, etc.
