- About 25% of a battery is made

up of steel (Able to recover
100% of the steel for reuse)

60% is made up of zinc,

manganese and potassium.

- 15% is made up of paper and

plastic

Batteries can be toxic

because when they arent
properly disposed, the toxic
chemicals leak into the
environment.
Toxic Metals: Acid, lead,
nickel, lithium, cadmium,
alkaline, mercury and nickel
metal hydride.

Yes! Batteries can be recycled! The steel of the batter can be reused after being recycled.
The zinc, manganese and potassium can be used as a micronutrient in the production of
fertilizer to grow corn. The paper and plastic remain are sent to an energy waste facility
to create electricity.

Why are they harmful to our environment?

Why you should recycle

The harmful substances permeate into the soil, groundwater, and surface water

batteries:

through landfills. When they are burnt in waste combustors, the toxins mix into
the air. Cadmium goes into plant roots and accumulates in fruits, vegetables and
