NJSLC Bid
Connected Hearts
Alex, Angela, Ashleigh, and Meg,
Hello from Gonzaga University! With enthusiasm, our delegation officially submits our bid to host the
2017 National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference.
Enclosed you will find supportive materials we are eager to share with you, including information
about Gonzaga, our location in Spokane, Washington, and why we want to share our Zag pride with the
greater Jesuit community of higher education. We have included letters from Gonzaga staff and community
members in support of our bid. We hope our passion will capture your hearts as well.
Our delegation left Canisius College at the end of June, inspired by the NJSLC 2015 conference to Be
the Light in our various groups across campus. Once back at GU, we began thinking about Gonzagas call
to shine this light more boldly out into the world. This opportunity to engage the other unique Jesuit schools
across the globe in another NJSLC conference, intent on a collective vision of working together for a brighter
future, fills each of our hearts with excitement. Such energy has fueled the writing of this bid. It would be with
honor that Gonzaga would host such an empowering event in 2017.
NJSLC sheds light on our Jesuit responsibility to the world around. Pope Francis, who has consistently
called on the youth of the world to stand up and make change has propelled a generation toward
challenging social justice to be of the utmost concern to our global community. In response to Pope Francis
urgency, we have named our theme for NJSLC 2017, Connected Hearts. We wish to use this topic in exploring
the delicate, interconnectedness of our lives with the world in which we share.
Last year, Gonzaga ranked highest nationally with the most students participating in post-graduate
service. This statistic exemplifies the importance of social justice in Gonzagas mission and the impact
community engagement consistently has on students beyond their four-year education. We aim to build
upon this foundation by demanding social justice as a tangible aspect of our daily lives for and with others.
As students, we have seen an incredible amount of growth on our campus over the past few years.
Recently, we were honored in hosting the finalists for the 2014 Opus Prize, an award providing over a million
dollars to inspiring humanitarians who demonstrate the active pursuit of social justice in our modern world.
The newly constructed John J. Hemmingson Center aspires to create a space for further engagement
between students and the world beyond our college campus, pushing us to seek justice. The Hemmingson
Center now houses Student Involvement, University Ministry, the Payne Center for Leadership Development,
the Center for Global Engagement, the Unity Multicultural Education Center, the LGBT Resource Center,
Veteran Affairs Office, and the Center for Community Action and Service Learning. This space finally allows
each of these integral departments to operate toward an integrated environment for experiential learning.
Through such collaboration, common ground is established and shared goals are met, with the intent that
Gonzaga students will feel empowered to create connections beyond the classroom. Though brand new, the
Hemmingson Center has already impacted students for the better, making this building ideal for sharing with
the NJSLC 2017 attendees.
We want to share our passion, for pursuing social justice, with our fellow Jesuit students. We wish to
recognize together, the power of our hearts connecting with the hearts of our peers, in building tolerance in
our world. Together, we can use social justice as a tool for forming a brighter future.
Thank you, Canisius College, for encouraging us to bring NJSLC 2017 to Gonzaga. And to the selection
committee, thank you for the time and consideration you have given to this process. We are enthusiastic
about the possibility of hosting NJSLC 2017. Please reach out to us with any questions or comments about
Connected Hearts.
With much gratitude,

Connected Hearts
Working independently is celebrated in our modern culture as progressive. Our world is competitive,
fast-paced, and focused. Progressively intentional cultures, like ours, put a premium on efficiency. For Jesuit
students especially, with so many distractions at our fingertips and pressures to succeed, the chances of
being too distracted to leverage opportunities of connection with each other, are high.
Gonzagas 2015 delegation left NJSLC with the desire to host the 2017 conference, specifically
emphasizing the power of making authentic connections, centered in community. We are adamant on
generating a better world.
Our hearts beat as one; one student body; one community of Jesuit universities; one society,
purely attempting solidarity; one globe, with our differences and desires. We acknowledge that the links
connecting these levels of oneness provide us with clarity, cutting through the dense haze of distractions
in our lives. Striving to procure such resonance has become the quest of our NJLSC 2017 bid, in creating
dialogue which identifies the infinite worth naturally defining our human hearts.
We cannot be men and women for and with others without pursuing, honestly, lives led in
accompaniment. Gonzaga wishes to take this opportunity to host NJSLC, in order to better address
humanitys call to be present more purposefully for and with each other.
We aim to assume such responsibility through a dedication to service, by seeking out solidarity to
fashion local and global significance, in responding to environmental crises, by celebrating diversity, through
acknowledging communal identity, and actively challenging personal growth.
Our Jesuit identity reminds us that while we may be vastly different as people, our hearts are tethered
through the human experience. And thus, we have a duty to one another in demanding that our global
community seek life-giving connections. We wish to spark a domino effect of healing, of love.
This concept sounds magnanimous, but we identify that connections begin in little ways on our
campuses. Through recognizing the light in each other, piece by piece, we are building programs that
engage our greater ability to globally connect our hearts.
At NJSLC 2017, Gonzaga invites students into both self-reflection and intentional dialogue. We will
be discerning the ways in which we recognize, as Jesuit students, our experience with connection and
disconnection on our campuses, in both activities and desires.
We encourage students to examine the power they individually have to collaborate toward
maximizing our potential for human goodness. As a university, we challenge ourselves and other delegations
to connect more authentically through the presentations, meditations, and acts of service available during
NJSLC 2017.
Gonzaga aims for students to leave the conference having had the time to celebrate connections.
Students should return to their own campuses knowing how we can all be better for each other. The
patience created through connected hearts gives us a voice for positive change on a global scale.
As Jesuit students, we are called to be community leaders in this change. We want to work
together to do justice in daily ways with big impact. Our hearts beat as one. NJSLC 2017: an opportunity for
connected hearts.

Nestled between the Cascades and the Rockies lies a hidden gem:
the Land of the Children of the Sun, or Spokane.
Spokane, Washington is one of the prided cities of the Pacific Northwest. This region
is where the Society of Jesus first began their ministry and eventually founded Gonzaga
University. Our beautiful city of 400,000 serves as the exciting cultural and financial hub of
the Inland Northwest. Near nature, near perfect, is our citys motto, and comes to life
as you float down the Spokane River or hike around the rushing river scenery. All these
natural wonders are minutes from the urban center of downtown. Winter, spring, summer,
or fall, Spokane is buzzing with activity. The Inland Northwest offers numerous lakes and
riverfronts within walking and driving distance teaming with a vibrant dining scene in
Spokane, with numerous local restaurants and weekly farmers markets to explore.
At 90 acres, Manito Park includes sprawling lawns, playgrounds, walking and biking
paths, flowers, topiary shrubs, a greenhouse conservatory and multiple picturesque
gardens. Its large trees and well-tended landscaping make for a great place to see
firsthand the beautiful nature the Inland Northwest has to offer.
The City of Spokanes Riverfront Park is a 100 acre park offering the best scenic
views of the spectacular Spokane Falls, great Centennial Trail bike access, attractive
walking paths, year round family and group entertainment options and an engaging
Sculpture Walk for over three million visitors a year. It is home to the 1909 Looff Carrousel,
the Riverfront Park Rotary Interactive Fountain, a gondola ride offering up close falls
viewing, giant screen IMAX Theatre and more. Riverfront Park is also the host of the largest
regional events including Bloomsday (largest timed 12k run in the nation), Hoopfest
(worlds largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament) and Pig Out in the Park along with many
others.
This beautiful city has so much charm, history, local farms and artwork to offer! We
hope you find comfort here during your stay at Gonzaga University and fall in love with
Spokane just as we have here at Gonzaga.

While we understand that selecting a school to host NJSLC 2017 can be a daunting
task. We want to reaffirm our dedication to our bid by demonstrating the progress that
has already been made and the steps we have taken to ensure that Gonzaga is the best
choice to host NJSLC 2017.
Save the Date: July 12-16, 2017
Choosing the perfect date for a conference 21 months in advance is challenging,
especially when Gonzaga has standing commitments throughout the summer. However,
our dream dates, July 12-16, come right between two commitments that offer a very
unique opportunity. From July 10 to July 14, the University Regents and Trustees will be
on campus for their annual week of meetings, and we are working to offer a networking
lunch to include these distinguished members of the Gonzaga community. Additionally,
beginning July 17, Gonzaga will be hosting a gathering of many of the worlds Jesuits
on campus for a week of reflection and teaching. Hosting NJSLC 2017 in between these
gatherings offers a unique opportunity for delegates to interact with professionals who
have received a Jesuit education, and some of the Jesuits from around the world.
Housing and Residence Life
The bid team has been in contact with Housing and Residence Life about hosting
NJSLC 2017 and providing student and advisor housing. The university hosts many
camps and groups over the summer months, so residence life staff will be assisting in the
residence halls throughout the conference. Additionally, housing is prepared with key
card access to buildings, and keys for delegates will be easily accessible.
Meals with Sodexo
We have contacted Sodexo, our dining service, and are working on preparing
meals that provide a range of options for attendees, regardless of dietary restrictions.
Sodexo Catering is wonderful for events, and would provide fabulous banquet-style meals
for the opening and closing ceremonies. For all other meals, our on-campus dining facility
is open during the summer and delegates would have access. Additionally, we would
work to bring in local restaurants for a food fair of sorts for lunch one day, showcasing
some of the great local companies weve come to love.
Student Interns
Since all of the students on the bid team will have graduated by July 2017 we are
working with our advisors to create a project that can easily be passed onto the four
hired interns for completion. We are confident in the students at Gonzaga constantly
seeking opportunities to get involved, and make sure we hire students that will proudly
represent not only Gonzaga, but NJSLC as a whole, in carrying out our plans for
Connected Hearts.

Page 4
When you ask the 7,400 students of Gonzaga University why they chose Gonzaga,
the answer is undoubtedly, the community. Our community is what defines Gonzaga
and we would like the opportunity to share it with NJSLC 2017 delegates.
In everything we do, there is a sense of community and desire to expand,
improving upon our current existence. For us, engagement occurs in infinite ways, only
limited by our own creativity. This engagement shines through serving with our Center
for Community Action and Service Learning, in the retreats we go on to find a better
understanding of ourselves and others, or in study abroad experiences to learn about
new cultures. The Gonzaga community is one of support and guidance for its students.
We seek an open, welcoming community which extends beyond the walls of our
university and continues on into wherever life may take us.
Gonzaga does not simply tell us to be men and women for and with others,
but strives to provide tangible opportunities for community engagement. Creating
authentic connections is personal for us; it starts at home. Being men and women for
and with others is a commitment we take seriously at Gonzaga and advocate to realize
daily as contemplatives in action. Positive connections that build community can take
many forms. Here at Gonzaga, this can range from something so simple as a smile and
holding the door for a new face, to being present for someone who is going through
difficult times. Community is at the heart of where we find our strength. Its what keeps
us connected. We are more than delighted to invite the NJSLC 2017 delegates into this
community.
The John J. Hemmingson Center, which serves as our new university center, will
have its grand opening this October. The impact that this addition to our campus has
had is incredible and provides the perfect opportunity for Gonzaga to host NJSLC. It
has a ballroom capable of holding 800 people, classrooms for leadership sessions, a
two-level dining facility (which will be serving our famous COG cookies), an auditorium
where movies can be shown, a place where Coffeehouse is held (A Gonzaga tradition
every Wednesday night where we invite local musicians to play, which we look forward
to sharing with NJSLC the first night of the conference), and space for advisor socials,
hospitality rooms, and a presenters social with facilities for printing if needed. The
anticipation around this building has been increasing to astronomical heights over the
last two years and the finished product did not disappoint. We would love the opportunity
to share these experiences with you.
We are thrilled for the opportunity to host
NJSLC 2017 and would love to see you here.
I am a ZAG;
I am a Bulldog;
Together, WE ARE GONZAGA!

Embracing Our Jesuit Community
As a community of Jesuit schools we are christened with a mission to follow in the
footsteps of Christ and St. Ignatius in developing the body of Christ, His people. We must
start close to the heart with ourselves, as students at Jesuit schools across the nation
and world. As leaders, we want to embody the idea of being one heart together in a
community, where we learn and lead by service and solidarity. We hope to explore and
express this idea of community with our fellow Jesuit schools and focus on the meaning
of a community, rooted in learning, connected at the heart. We will commit ourselves to
developing connection with others, especially within the framework of social justice and
solidarity.
Living and Learning as a Way of Life
We find ourselves in a unique place among others in the world, one of learning and
living in a safe and free space. We hope to embody the inward and intentional focus
that is crucial to develop learning not only about the world around us, but also about
ourselves. As Gonzaga students, we investigate our position in relation to others and use
what we have found to share our experience with others. Our lives are not just ones of
static understanding, but dynamic learning. We plan to help others develop a similar
strategy that focuses on living and learning beyond the classroom and school walls, and
how learning from others experiences aid in our and their development as citizens of the
world.
Inspiration and Influence
An inherent part of leadership is the ability to influence and inspire. Throughout
the conference we hope to be able to influence and inspire the delegates to theorize,
mobilize, localize, and globalize positive change. Similarly, we hope to empower others
and help them to use their influence to inspire all those they encounter. Through initiatives
of service, intellectual development, practical skills, camaraderie, and social justice we
aim to express why we believe and catalyze inspiration our hearts, others hearts and the
hearts of the world.
Connection
When people are together, united by a common bond it fosters connection. Yet,
that connection must be nurtured in order to create a system of support, authenticity,
openness, collaboration, and honor. Spiritually, socially and academically, we seek to
demonstrate and foster this type of connection, as we have built at Gonzaga, and bring
it into the hearts of our fellow student leaders. As responsible members of our global
community, we hope to encourage and mature our connections with God, ourselves, our
universities and our brothers and sisters. To be connect at the heart is to be connected
with passion and hope. We aim to help the students develop these same strong
connections that last the trials and tests that we each must face.

Explanation of Budget:
We present this budget as an "actual cost" budget - for a 300 person conference, we
acknowledge that a projected cost-per-delegate of $417 is high. However, we believe
that our projected budget covers all expenses that we would encounter, and have
prepared to the best of our abilities. Additionally, we believe that we can find $10,000
between fundraising and sponsorships in order to decrease the effective cost per
delegate, and sponsor student intern stipends as well.
With this in mind, we would set our registration fees at three levels: $360 per delegate
for early registration, $375 per delegate for regular registration, and $390 for late
registration. We believe that we can get registration costs under $400 per delegate, and
still host the best conference that Gonzaga can offer.

We love being Zags. Its hard to narrow down the infinite reasons why, but
here are the top ten things we think youll love during your time with us:
1. Focus on Social Justice:
At Gonzaga, social justice is more than a one-time service experience. Social justice
is why we believe that we are all connected. It is why we hold ourselves accountable for
the changes happening in our world that deserve our attention. We dont have all the
answers, but we seek understanding. It is only through the acknowledgement that our
hearts are connected that we can begin to comprehend how to work together to create
a better community.
2. The Jesuit experience:
Ignatian ideals surround us: from the reflective times offered in classes to retreats
with University Ministry, the Jesuits interacting with us as professors, mentors and residence
hall next-door neighbors adds a unique aspect to our education.
3. Campus views:
Its hard to explain to someone just how breathtaking our campus is. Walking down
Bulldog Alley, the beautiful brick walkway through the middle of campus, its impossible
not to notice the perfect blend of history and modernism. The twin spires of St. Aloysius
Church are always there to guide us home, and provide a welcoming site in the dark
night sky.
4. Gonzagas people:
Zag students are pretty cool. Even cooler? The professors, faculty and staff
members that truly know how to make anyones day. Its not uncommon for a student to
be invited over to a professors house for dinner, and office hours usually run long because
youll get caught up in a great conversation about life. Staff work hard to know what
student life is all about have nothing but love for the Gonzaga students they serve.
5. Friendly neighbors:
Gonzagas campus is nestled between beautiful Downtown Spokane and the
Logan neighborhood, which gives students a diverse neighborhood. The Logan Block
Party, a local event planned by Gonzaga staff and students, brought together the
Gonzaga community and Logan families to have fun and welcome a new academic
year.
6. Spokane itself:
There are so many great things to do around Spokane! Areas like the South Hill,
Perry District and the Spokane Valley offer up a number of ways to spend the afternoon,
or you could relax and enjoy the views at Greenbluff or Manito Park. In the summer, we
love to take an afternoon and go hike along the Spokane River, but in the winter we ice
skate in Riverfront Park. Its the perfect place to enjoy every day.

7. The Hemmingson Center:
Its pretty hard to miss this sprawling hub for student activity opened in July of
2015 and has already become a staple in our community. Not only is it popular among
students, it is at the forefront of green buildings. With natural light, hydroelectric and
geothermal power, it is our most eco-friendly space yet and were excited to expand
upon our desire to build with the environment in mind while meeting the functional needs
of students, staff and faculty.
8. Student Involvement:
Student involvement is a way of life at Gonzaga. With many outlets of involvement
such as academics, retreats, performing arts, intramurals, immersion trips, over 150 clubs,
and social activities, Gonzaga is a place where its hard not be engaged. But best of all,
if students dont find a place they are encouraged to create their own opportunities with
support from their peers, faculty and staff.
9. People really hold doors open for others:
It seems like such a little thing, but it isnt rare to see a student go out of their way to
hold open a door for someone possibly 20 feet away. Its that kind of small consideration
for others that demonstrates that our care for one another goes beyond our words.
10. Exploring leadership:
Throughout the Division of Student Development we focus on finding our common
values as Jesuit leaders in order best apply them to our unique leadership experiences on
and off campus. This empowering model encourages critical thinking and helps develop
our authenticity as leaders. This depth of leadership is something that we are beyond
thrilled to share with the rest of our Jesuit university community.
