QUESTION 1: A heater used to warm blood before contact with a patient is initially filled with 1 liter
of blood at 30C as shown in figure below. When the electric heater is turned on, blood at 30C is fed into
the heater at a flow rate of 10 L/min and heated blood is discharged from the heater at the same flow rate.
The rate of heating is 6 kW and a stirrer adds work to the system at a rate of 0.5 kW. Calculate the time
required for the temperature of the outlet stream to reach body temperature of 37C. Assume heat lost to
the surroundings, kinetic and potetial energy changes are negligible and the system is mixed very well.
Cvblood = Cpblood =4.18 J/g.K and blood = 1.056 g/cm3

QUESTION 2: Air expands with a mass flow rate of 10 kg/s through a turbine from 500 kPa, 900 K to
100 kPa, 600 K. The inlet velocity is negligible compared to the exit velocity of 100 m/s. The turbine
operates at steady state. Heat transfer from the turbine to the surroundings and potantial energy effects are
negligible too. Calculate the power developed by the turbine in kW, and the exit area, in m2.
QUESTION 3: A piston-cylinder arrangement contains air at 690 kPa and 294 K. The piston moves when
106 kJ of heat is transferred to the system and the volume changes from 14 liters to 57 liters. Assume the
air to be an ideal gas, calculate:
a-the change in the internal energy of air (kJ), b- the final temperature of air (K) and, c- the heat capacity
of air (kJ/kgK).
