Seven things students want to know:

1. Who is my teacher as a person?

Tell the students what are some of the goals for them
Introduce providing some personal details about yourself to students
Students will become familiarize by observing your actions, appearance and by listening
Regardless of how old you are let them to see you are the ADULT in CHARGE

2. Where am I supposed to sit?


Have assigned seats by numbers already in place
As the students enter the classroom provide students with their assigned number
Have seat chart available

3. Will my teacher treat me like a human being?


Let them know you have high expectations of them
Let them see you are a person of integrity from the beginning
Provide assurance that our classroom will be a safe environment for learning

4. Am I in the right classroom?


Introduce yourself, Hi, Im Ms. Lundy I will be your Skills Teacher
Smile as you greet students upon arrival
Have name and subject visible on the door

5. What will I be doing this year?


Enlighten students on the content and the processes
Allow the students to see your enthusiasm for the subject and teaching
Ensure that the students understand the BIG PICTURE of the class

6. How will I be graded?


Let them know that you are fair, understanding and consistent
Let them know how they will be successful
Show students that everyone has the opportunity to succeed

7. What are the rules of the classroom?


Students will know what is expected of them early
Seek colleagues input to determine a reasonable set of rules
Display five POSITIVELY stated rules
