Easter celebrates 2 important events: the death and the resurrection of Jesus.
I. Who is in control?
A. Jesus was led (12 times in the Gospel narratives).
1. To Annas.
2. To Caiaphas.
3. To the Sanhedrin.
4. To Pilate.
5. "Sent" to Herod.
6. To be crucified.
B. In the events leading up to His crucifixion, we see Him passive -- others
force Him to do things.
1. Dying on the cross is exactly what He would choose to do
because it is the means to fulfilling His Fathers will.
2. He was in control of Himself (words on the cross).
II. How much did Jesus suffer?
A. The physical: afflicted, wounded, bruised, chastised...
1. Some people emphasize the mistreatment of the Messiah at His
crucifixion.
2. The New Testament deemphasizes the abuse the Lord received:
He was scourged and crucified.
The Scriptures do not draw attention to the abuse; there are
other, more profitable, areas for inquiry and thought.
B. The spiritual: separation from God.
1. He suffered for us.
Who Killed Jesus?
The Jews?
The Romans?
US (Is 53:4-6).
GOD (Is 53:10).
2. He suffered the wrath of God against sin (Is 53:10-11).
For what Christ suffered, God was satisfied that sin had been
sufficiently punished. v. 11.
3. His suffering is expressed in the words, My God, My God, why
have you forsaken Me? (Ps 22:1; Mt 27:46). Jesus fulfilled the
prophecies.
1. Why did Jesus die? as a substitute for me.
2. What happened after He died? He was resurrected.
3. What must I do to have a part in the salvation that Jesus provided? whoever
believes in Himhas everlasting life.
