WHAT IS MEANT BY
TERM 'SMART'
MATERIAL?

Designed materials that have one or more properties

that can be significantly change in a controlled fashion
by external stimuli.
In other words they are products designed to react to
change in their environment.
Also known as shape memory material (SMM) and
shape memory technology (SMT).

FACTORS THAT CHANGES THE

PROPERTIES OF SMART MATERIALS.
Temperature
pH
Magnetic field
Pressure
Moisture

EXAMPLES
Colour changing materials
Thermochromic
Photochromic
Hydrochromic

Electroluminescent materials
Shape memory alloy

THERMOCHROMIC
Reacts to
Temperature
Change colour as
temperature change
There are two layers of
ink on top of each
other.
When heat is applied,
the top thermochromic
layer goes CLEAR
revealing the colour
underneath.

PHOTOCHROMIC
Reacts to light
There are two
layers of ink on top
of each other.
When light is
applied, the top
photochromic layer
goes CLEAR
revealing the colour
underneath.

HYDROCHROMIC
Reacts to water
There are two layers
of ink on top of each
other.
When moisture/water
is applied, the top
hydrochromic layer
goes CLEAR revealing
the colour underneath.

ELECTROLUMINESCENT
MATERIALS

Give out light when

an electric current is
applied to them.
Applications: Safety signs
Safety clothing for
use at night.

SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY. (SMAS)

An alloy that
remembers their
original shape.
When it is heated above
a certain temperature, it
will return to original
shape.
Application :
Making spectacle frames
Triggers to start the
sprinklers in fire alarm systems

CONCLUSION
It is not impossible to have something that is beyond
our expectation.
Great idea with produce a lot of new smart material to
improve our life.
