Blue Bus Response Avoids Easter

without a Weighbridge
Last Wednesday afternoon, the North gate incoming
weighbridge was being calibrated and certified by Newcastle Weighing Services when it was identified that the
clearance gap between the bridge and roadway concrete section was insufficient to allow correct operation
of the weighbridge.

Contractors involved included RIG Installations who provided labour to remove and re-install the embedded angle in preparation for Robert Guy & Sons to cut a deep
section of concrete from the existing abutment.

By Thursday morning planning was well underway. By

late afternoon a section had been cut from the end of
the roadway concrete, providing the required clearance
to allow correct operation of the weighbridge.

A Great Way to Cut Costs

Great ideas come by Fives?
Fives Services (ECL) were asked to remove the table
on VDC2 for rebuild prior to the outage on VDC1 in the
Casthouse.
Historically these ropes were removed by entering the
confined space and removing the waterproofing tape.
The team were then required to work in a damp confined area to hammer the pins from the rope clevises.
This activity had a high risk of hammer strike injury to
either of the two workers.

that the need for hiring 2 mobile cranes, was reduced by

2 hours each and the more effective method reduced
the total man hours of the task by 16 hours.

Well done Fives Services, some great, innovative thinking!

During the pre-planning phase a better tool for the task

was identified after doing some research. Fives Services (ECL) found a hydraulic cutter capable of cutting
the high strength ropes. This enabled them to cut the
ropes in a safe and controlled manner and then remove
the pins once the table was removed from the confined
space. This has eliminated the hammer strike potential
in the confined space area and reduced the time spent
working in cramped, greasy and damp conditions within
the confined space.

This Safety improvement comes with more benefits!

The reduction of time spent in the VDC pit also meant
