The Paombong Public Market is located in Sitio Tabon, Brgy. San Isidro, Paombong,
Bulacan. It is situated few steps away from the town plaza, right at the heart of
Paombongs trade and commerce. It is in close proximity to different places vital to
the lives of the citizens of Paombong: St. James the apostle Parish, Paombong
Municipal Hall, PB-TODA terminal, STRO-TODA terminal, jeepney & bus terminal,
Paombong Rural Health Center, Paombong Public Cemetery, St. Martin De Porres
Catholic School, Paombong Central School, Paombong High School, and San Roque
National High School. Together with these places, the Paombong Public Market
completes the daily itinerary of a Paombongeos.
Paombong Public Market had served the citizens of Paombong for over 19 years. It
stands now in the site of a previous sports center. It was remodeled at 1997 during
the term of Mayor Rufino Valencia. Since then it had never seized to serve the
citizens of Paombong. However it is still far from being adequate.
There are different points where we could improve the efficiency of Paombong
Public Market. But first we need to identify the problems that keep the market from
achieving the glory it deserves.
The most apparent problem one may observe is the lack of adequate daylighting.
This
Daylighting
The most apparent problem one may observe is the lack of adequate daylighting.
Daylighting is a very important factor in design. It is necessary for revealing the
task needed to be accomplished within the structure. It also creates a feeling of
safety and security. Moreover, the absence of daylighting may have users resort to
artificial light. As of the moment, vendors use incandescent lights, although it is not
advisable as it may provide venue for selling fraudulent meat products to the
unknowing consumers. It also creates problem for mobility. Additionally, artificial
lighting may generate a larger cost of electrical consumption.
Electrical Layout
Remodeled from a sports center, one can only imagined how the market is wired.
Wires are actually exposed over the metal pipes supporting each stalls signage.
From one interview a correspondent accounted how it became a hazard during the
previous Floods brought by Habagat. The faulty wiring may cause fire in the long
run which may affect not only the vendors occupying the market but the residents
alongside the market.
Circulation

If ever any fire or disturbance occur inside the market during operating hours
circulation may very well be a problem. With hallways of not more than 1.50 meters
and 6 1.00 meter doors, it may trap users inside. With the circulation in check, it
might also hinder movement and productivity.
Ventilation
The market was enclosed with two firewalls on each side and two walled stalls in
front and the back. There are no operable windows which could let air in except
slats on wall and the doors. There is virtually no source of ventilation. However, the
market has a high ceiling to accommodate the needed air volume for users.
Solar Shading
Solar shading is not exactly a problem within the building, although it might be a
problem to stalls outside the market building.
Considerable amount of sunlight is casted upon the front and rear side of the
building during mornings. It is not very hazardous as compared to the amount of
light casted on the rear side of the building during afternoons. That is where
interventions are needed.
Sanitation
There is an apparent absence of a proper waste disposal area or scheme. This
creates a lot of problem in terms of sanitation. There is also a lingering foul smell
within the building which we can trace back to poor sanitation. The foul smell can
also imply presence of bacteria and viruses than can be a threat not only to people
but to products and goods as well.
Segregation
Stalls are not segregated according to the products their offering. This is a
hindrance to the efficiency of consumers shopping.
Given the current situation of the market there is much to improve. There are a lot
of possibilities, we can intervene all we have to do is make the change.
