Evaluation of Samantha Santiaguels Senior Project by Rachel Lizan Inside Advisor

Samanthas action was, twofold, including an internship and culture classes modeled after
that internship. I set her up with her internship at the Philippine Cultural Centers School of
Creative and Performing Arts. I met her there on several of their classes. She was prompt and
pleasant to their students and faculty. She spent several weeks both observing the classes and
then participating as a volunteer instructor.
She conducted a four week module of Filipino culture classes at the public library. I was
in attendance for one of her sessions. There were about 10 students who were actively engaged
in a language lesson. They sang songs and also took part of engaging educational games on the
board. Each lesson also included a cultural component. In the lesson I viewed, Samantha
organized and arranged a visit by a local martial arts studio that gave a demonstration on
Eskrima, one of the fighting arts of the Philippines. They gave the historical context and showed
off their skills. The students were delighted by the demo.
Throughout the entire process, Samantha has been self-motivated and able to plan and
work efficiently to create a quality product. She was professional at her internship and also
worked to design appealing lessons that met her goals of educating young Filipinos on their
culture.
