1.

(5 points) Suppose that we are testing H0: = 0 versus H1: 0. Calculate the P-value
for the following observed values of the test statistic:
(a)

Z0 = 2.25

Z
[ 0]
1
P=2
P=2 [ 1 ( 2.25 ) ]=2 ( 10.98778 )
P=0.02444

(b)

Z0 = 1.55

Z

P=2
P=2 [ 1 ( 1.55 ) ]=2 ( 10.93943 )
P=0.12114

(c)

Z0 = 2.10

P=2 [ 1 ( 2.10 ) ]=2 ( 10.98214 )

P=0.03572

(d)

Z0 = 1.95

P=2

P=2 [ 1 ( 1.95 ) ]=2 ( 10.97441 )

P=0.05118

(e)

P=2 [ 1 ( 0.10 ) ]=2 (10.53983 )

P=0.92034

2.(5 points) The diameters of steel shafts produced by a certain manufacturing process should
have a mean diameter of 0.255 inches. The diameter is known to have a standard deviation
of = 0.0001 inch. A random sample of 10 shafts has an average diameter of 0.2545 inches.
a. Set up the appropriate hypotheses on the mean.
H 0 : =0.255 H 1 : 0.255
b. Test these hypotheses using = 0.05. What are your conclusions?
n=10 =0.0001 y = 0.2545
y 0
Zo=
With this being the equation we simply plug in the numbers

n
0.25450.255
Z0=
=15.81
0.0001/ 10

Using =0.05 we say

z 0.025=1.96 (It is to be noted that this part is found in the

back of the book in the z chart). This clearly shows that we should reject

H0

based on the =0.05.

c. Find the P-value for this test.
Using excel you find that the P-Value = 2.65467 x 1056
d. Construct a 95 percent confidence interval on the mean shaft diameter.
