Title:
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly

Grade Level: Kindergarten
Time: 20 minutes
Overview:
Children need to interact with literature. This book can incorporate

two important reading strategies for kindergarten sequencing and rhyming. The
important lessons can be presented through movement and singing.

Objectives:
1. Students will learn sequence of animals eaten through the story.
2. Students will recognize rhyming and pick out rhyming words.
3. Students will act out their given character as they make their way to the old
ladys stomach.

Materials:

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly by Pam Adams

2 boxes for Old Ladys stomach
Pins for students to wear to designate what character they are
Apron and velcro characters
Guitar

Activities/Procedures:
Have students draw pins so they know which character they will be
Teach the part of the book that will be sung
There was an old lady who swallowed a fly, I dont know why she
swallowed the fly, perhaps shell die
Explain the activity
Students take on their character, and they have to move like that
character into the Old Ladys stomach
Read story and use apron to help students follow along

Reading Standards for Informational Text- Key Ideas and Details: With
prompting and support, describe the connection between two individuals,
events, ideas, or pieces of information in the text.
Performance Standards- B.4.3 Students will create a human or animal
character based upon a costume or object (prop)
