Restorativesystemsofdisciplinenotonlycreateasaferandpositiveschoolclimateit

reacttosituationincontroloftheiremotions.Inordertoimplementrestorativeschooldiscipline
therearethreeshiftsthatmustbeconsideredbyschoolleadership.
Thefirstshiftisidentifiedasconformity.Studentswillactinawaythatiswithinthe
standardsofthesocialnorms.Thesesocialnormshaveanincredibleinfluenceoverstudents
andtheirbehaviorchoices.Byshiftingthesenormssothatbehaviorchoicesaredrivenby
internalizationratherthancomplianceoridentificationmotivationsaschool'sclimatewillshift
towardsthepositive.Thesecondshiftishowaschoolimposescontrolovertheirstudents.Strict
controloverstudentsisproblematicfortworeasons.Thefirstiswecreateaneducational
environmentthatteatersperilouslyonacliffofanxiousanticipation.Staffandstudentsworkand
learninaneducationalenvironmentthatisnotrelaxedbuttense.Secondlywecreatestudents
wholackessentiallifeskills.Studentsareunabletolearnfrommistakes,safelytestboundaries
orlearninternalization.Bysubscribingtoarestorativedisciplineapproachschoolscanprovide
anenvironmentwherestudentreceivedastandardsbasededucationbutalsonecessarylife
skills.Thelastshifttobeaddressedisbehavioralfocus.Ineducationthefocustendstobeon
reactingtonegativebehavior,withnegativeconsequences.Insteadoffocusingonthenegative,
timeshouldbespenttrainingtoadoptnewbehaviors.Teachingstudentsskillslike,dealingwith
emotions,peerpressure,negativeselftalkarewaysinwhichwecanbeproactiveconcerning
studentdiscipline.
Restorativedisciplinemaynotproduceresultsrightaway,butitcancreatelonglasting
results.Itismyopinionthatwhilethismethodstakestime,restorativedisciplineprovidesthe
bestguidelinesforstudentsandstaff.
