    Phillip's mother feared the war in Curacao and wanted to escape to Virginia by ship. Even after a ship exploded from a U-boat attack, she still wanted to leave. Timothy saved Phillip and a cat from drowning instead of two black people like himself, possibly due to racism or valuing Phillip's life over others.
