For realising discrete systems we consider

the impulse response of the system.
Finite Impulse response :- When the
length of the impulse response is finite.
Infinite Impulse response:- When the
impulse response is of infinite length.

IIR linear time invariant system has an

infinite-duration impulse response.

As we can see the weighted sum involves

the present and all the past input samples
and hence would require infinite memory.

Basic IIR Digital Filter

Structures
Therefore its practical implementation as
implied by convolution is clearly
impossible.
To implement IIR filters we feedback
past outputs.
So system output y(n) depends on any
number of past output values y(n-1),
y(n-2),. and this systems are called
recursive systems.

Direct Form IIR Digital Filter

Structures
As we can see to implement N order
system we need 2N delay elements and
this structure is noncanonic.
For this we develop a more compact
structure known as the Direct form II.
