Dinner Time Statistics

By Alex Reilly, Lindon Dauti, Chris Hayden, Justin

Introduction
Research Question:
What is the average time that most freshman eat dinner?
Hypothesis:
Most students will eat dinner between 6-7 p.m., because most students have at
least 1 hour per night of homework and get around 8 hours of sleep.
Why is this research being done?
We asked this question because we were curious about when most high-schoolers
eat dinner, as this can have an effect on family values, amount of sleep, and
amount of homework completed.

Methods
We gathered our information by passing
around a survey which asked each
student the question What time do you
eat dinner on most nights?. We got 18
results with a range from 4 p.m. to 10
p.m.

What function best fits the data?
We decided that a 1 hour interval would best fit the data. We came to this
conclusion because this creates 6 bins and keeps the amount of frequencies fairly
balanced.
Outliers:
Our data included no outliers, mainly due to the short range (6 hours) and
balanced frequencies.

Limitations & Errors
1. We only surveyed our class when we stated freshmen (Other schools could
have been surveyed as well)
2. We asked a very bold question, which allowed a huge range of results.
3. Not everybody in the class participated.
Fixes:
4. Made the question more specific, only allowing specific responses (Around
what hour do you usually eat dinner?)
5. Sent out an online survey to the class of 2019.

Future Questions
1. Do you eat dinner around a certain time frame often?
2. Do you finish your homework before dinner?
3. How long do you and your family usually take to finish dinner?
4. Do you always eat dinner
5. Do you usually eat dinner with your family, or out of the house?
All of these questions will help narrow down the results we had to help us
answer our research question.

What we learned
Most of the class eats a fairly late dinner (7-9 p.m.). For the most part students
were quick to respond, indicating a fairly frequent time schedule amongst them.
The group themselves had learned that their schedules fit in with the class
majority.
