Magna Carta
The Magna Carta (or Great Charter) is a charter of
liberties
The Magna Carta was also a symbol of freedom from
oppression

Succession of James II
On the 6th of February, 1685 Charles II died and James II
took the power
Many attempted to exclude James II from the throne and
failed

Repeal of the Test Acts


In April 1686, it was decided James II could provide the Test

Acts without the Knowledge of Parliament in some cases


On July 15, 1686, the Kings power was delegated as
Governor of the England Church
James began a campaign to appoint the sympathetic electors
Many who had the right to vote were asked to repeal the
penal laws and Test Acts
Many were switched with Roman Catholics and dissenters

Declaration of Indulgence
On April 5th , 1687, James II published a declaration of
indulgence
Local people were asked whether they would agree with
the repeal of the penal laws
In August, 1687, nine lord lieutenants were dismissed by
the king because they refused to answer the Questions

Dutch Invasion
William of Orange Intervened because of
James Catholic second wife finally fell pregnant with a healthy
male heir
bringing England into his war against Louis XIVs France
the Parliament he summoned would repeal the Test Acts

Seven peers wrote to William to pledge their allegiance if


he fought James II
William prepared for the invasion with over 21,000
soldiers

The Glorious Revolution


The Declaration of Indulgence was reissued by James II on

April 27, 1688


On the 18th of May, 1688, the Whig history as the Seven
Bishops began
A petition requested the King to withdraw his declaration
of indulgence
William of Orange, Protestant son-in-law to James,
intervened to save both Church and State
James II was defeated by Williams 15,000 troops

Bill of Rights

On 22th of January, 1689, a new Parliament met


William of Orange held the Convention Parliament
On February 12, 1689, a Declaration of Rights was issued
Lord Halifax offered both William of Orange and Princess
Mary the crown
The declaration was later embodied in the Bill of Rights
