Basic thoughts on Astrology

Indian Astrology as we see today is not the true ancient Astrology. The ancient
Astrology is lost to a large extent. What we see today, is only a fragmentary
reconstruction of what has been lost.
In the Vedic times, Astrology was used mainly to fix the times of Yagnas, to
start works related to cultivation, and to do daily religious functions/duties.
This was based on the movement of Sun, the seasons and Eclipses. We can
call this the Sun based Astrology.
In the Puranas, though Rasis were known, emphasis was given only to Star
constellations and the movement of planets over them. This was Nakshatra
based Astrology. You can find any number of slokas in Puranas to prove this
point. This can be called Moon(star) based Astrology.
When Rasis became prominent, efforts were made to integrate all the three
systems i.e original Sun based Astrology, Nakshatra based Astrology and Rasi
based Astrology. In this process, symmetry was the main ingredient and to
achieve this end, star Abhijit was sacrificed from the original 28 star
constellations. This became necessary due to the fact that the number 28
cannot fit easily into 360 degress,12 rashis,9 planets scheme.
To achieve symmetry, all the rasis were thought to be 30 degrees in duration
where as it is not so in reality. All the 27 star constellations were thought to be
13 degrees 20 minutes each in longitude uniformly, which again is not true. So

to achieve symmetry, many things were adjusted, some sacrificed and some
altogether modified. In this process, I think many mistakes were committed
knowingly or unknowingly.
I think this is the reason why so many dasa systems, so many house division
methods and so many branches of Astrology are created. We did commit
mistakes in the basic things and then invented so many other methods to
understand and explain the reality.
Nature is so simple. It has its own way. It follows its own ideas. If we deviate
from Nature, we go wrong and suffer. When Nature is so simple why should
we be so complex in our methods?
But then, is the effort to integrate everything in Astrology, wrong in its
approach? Seems to be not. Nature is one. It is an integrated whole. So, while
understanding nature, Integration is very much necessary but not at the cost
of sacrificing the truth.
There is another point of view. The present system of Astrology that we follow
now, appears to be the most possible effort to integrate everything, i.e the
Sun, the Moon, the Stars, the Planets, the Houses and the Rasis into a 360
degree phenomenon.
So till a better and plausible solution is found out, we have no choice but to
follow the present system. But let us not forget that this system has its own
limitations. Nothing is perfect yet. So, with our limited and imperfect tools, we
should not expect 100% pin-pointed and minute-based predictions.
