What is the Muscular System?
• Helps the body move and perform
involuntary functions – breathing and
digestion
• Roughly half our body weight comes from
muscle tissue
• There are over 650 muscles
Muscular System Responsibilities
1. Body movement
2. Maintain form and shape – posture
3. Maintain body temperature – 98.6
Muscle Types

1. Skeletal muscle
2. Smooth muscle
3. Cardiac muscles
Skeletal Muscle
• Attaches to bones via tendons
• Consist of many muscle cells called fibers.
• Multinucleated – many nuclei
• Striped appearance (contain striations)
• Voluntary control
• Produces every movement

Smooth Muscle
• No striations (stripes)
• Involuntary…we have no control.
• One nucleus per cell
• Not attached to bones
• Common in blood vessel walls and in the
gut
• Moves food through the digestive tract &
maintains a normal, healthy blood pressure

Cardiac Muscle
Cardiac Muscle
• Found only in the heart.
• Slight striations
• Short muscle cells with a nucleus
• Requires a constant supply of oxygen. If
no oxygen for 30 seconds, cells can die.
• Its contraction keeps blood circulating
through its vessels.

Muscle Characteristics
All muscles have four characteristics
1.contractibility ability to shorten or
lengthen
• Pump blood from the heart into blood
vessels
• Move food through digestive system
Muscle Characteristics
All muscles have four characteristics
2. Excitability ability to respond to stimuli
by producing an electrical impulse (action
potential).
3. Extensibility ability to stretch; allows for
movement
4. Elasticity ability to return to original
length
