MUSCULAR SYSTEM

MUSCULAR SYSTEM
•The muscular system is the most
prominent and extensive
anatomical feature of the body.
•It is specialized for contractility.
•All muscles tissues have the ability
to contract or shorten its normal
length.
Major groups of muscle

1.Striated (skeletal or striped)

muscles
2.Smooth (unstriped or visceral)
muscles
3.Cardiac (cross striated, involuntary;
heart) muscle
1.Striated muscles
• this muscle is composed of long,
unbranched and multi nucleated
fibers.
• Found attached by tendons at one or
both ends o some part of the
skeleton
• It is a voluntary muscle

Example: Muscle of the limbs and

trunk
2.Smooth muscles

• Smooth structure does not posses

the cross striation characteristics of
striated and cardiac muscles
• Not attached to the skeleton
• Found in the muscular layer of the
stomach and intestines; in the
urogenital system, blood vessels,
lungs and etc.
3.Cardiac muscle
•It is found in the heart. It
possesses the cross striations of
stripped muscle but the nuclei is
located centrally rather than on
the periphery of the muscle
bundles.
•Heart muscle is a syncytium or
union of cells that forms a single
structure
Functions of muscle
1.Pumping of blood around the body
2.Movement of extremities
3.For respiration
4.Movement of nutrient material along the
gastrointestinal tract
5.Transport of urine to the urinary bladder
from the kidneys and emptying of the
bladder
