WHAT IS 5 ‘S’

Based on Japanese words that begin with ‘S’,


the 5 ‘S’ Philosophy focuses on effective work
place organization and standardized work
procedures. 5 ‘S’ simplifies your work
environment, reduces waste and non-value
activity while improving quality, efficiency and
safety.

• 2 ‘S’ Seiton means Systematize
• 3 ‘S’ Seiso means Sweep
• 4 ‘S’ Seiketsu means Standardize
• 5 ‘S’ Shitsuke means Sustain

Guidelines for Practicing 1st S – Sort

• Separate needed items from unneeded items.


• Remove unneeded items from working areas:
– Items never used: discard them.
– Items not needed now: store them
separately.
• Remove all excess items from working areas.
• Identify unneeded items.

• Store items needed by most people in a
common storage area and assign a person to
manage this area if possible.
• Store items needed only by each individual
in his/her own working area.
• Organize working / storage area.

Objectives
• Needed items must be stored for easy
retrieval.
• First-in first-out (FIFO) must be applied.
• Save storage space and time

• A place for everything and everything in its place.
• Place instructions & manual close to the point of
use.
• Design the storage areas such that the entrance is
wider and the depth is shallower.
• Layout the storage area with optimum usage of
space.
• Place items such that they are easily visible.
• Store similar items together. Different items in
separate rows.

• Don't stack items together. Use rack or shelf
where possible.
• Use color codes for quickly identifying items.
• Clearly label each item and its storage areas
(leading to visibility).
• Try to use see-through cover or door for visibility.

Objectives
• Cleanliness ensures a more comfortable and
safe working place.
• Cleanliness will lead to visibility so as to
reduce search time.
• Cleanliness ensures a higher quality of work
and products.

Guidelines
• Use dust collecting covers or devices to prevent
possible dirt or reduce the amount of dirt.
• Investigate the causes of dirtiness and implement a
plan to eliminate the sources of dirt.
• Have one’s own cleaning of equipment and
working area and perform basic preventive
maintenance.
• Keep everything clean for a constant state of
readiness.

• Keep everything clean for a constant state of
readiness.
• Make a place for everything and keep
everything in its place.
• Standard working principle for employees.
• Involve your employees/staff in the
development of such standards.
