5S Awareness Training

What is 5S ?

“It is for improvement of working environment.”

* The 5S methodology originated in Japan and was first implemented


by the Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC).

* 5S is a way of organizing and managing the workspace and work flow

with the intent to improve efficiency by eliminating waste, improving


flow and reducing process unreasonableness.

* This system focuses on putting everything where it belongs and


keeping the workplace clean, which makes it easier for people to
do their jobs without wasting time or risking injury.
What 5S can do? :-

> Improve safety.

> Improve Productivity

> Identify & Remove waste from the workplace.

> Increase quality.

> Makes abnormalities immediately visible.

> Improve floor space utilization

>Teamwork Improve due to everyone’s participation

* Focuses on eliminating unnecessary items from the
workplace

* Keep only essential items which are required

* Prioritizing things per requirements and keeping them in


easily
accessible places

* Categorize equipment, furniture, tool etc in your


working place

* Everything else is stored or discarded.


S2: Set
* There should be a place for everything and everything
should be
in its place.

* The place for each item should be clearly labelled or


identified.

* Items should be arranged in a manner that promotes


efficient
work flow, with equipment used most often being the
most easily
accessible.

* This will save time and energy to look for something.


S3: Shine

* Clean the workspace and all equipment, and keep it clean, tidy and
organized.

* At the end of each shift, clean the work area and be sure everything is
restored to its place.

* Maintaining cleanliness should be part of the daily work – not an


occasional activity initiated when things get too messy.

* Daily sweeping and mopping of floor, bathroom, corridor etc must be


done.
S4: Standardize
* Maintain an environment where S1 to S3 are implemented in the
same manner throughout the organization.

* Give opportunities to employees to take active part in the


development of these standards.

* Provide Work instructions, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

* Checklist development and regular usage for SOPs is necessary.

* Everyone should know exactly what his or her responsibilities are for
adhering to the first 3 S's.
S5: Sustain
* Maintain S1-S4 through discipline, commitment and
empowerment.

* It focuses on defining a new mindset and a standard in


workplace.

* Periodical evaluation of 5S activities with proper advices


for
continuation and further improvements.

* Provide time to time refresher training to everyone.

* Give appreciation, recognition and awarding on good 5S


activities.

Scope of 5S Activities in Hysil Plant:-
There is also some requirement of 5S activities in Hysil Plant in
different departments / Areas.
> Maintenance Department
Maintenance area is one of the most important area for 5S related
activities due to large number of repairing/servicing work. There are
too much spare, tools, repaired & non repaired items, pumps,
motors,
scrap items etc for maintain with the help of 5S.
> RM Section
RM section also required 5S activities. Lime & silica powder,
glass wool, jeans pulp, chopped glass etc various type of
materials are used in RM section. Due to this cleaning and
caring is very important. So 5S activities must be used here
on
daily basis.
> Cutting Section & MHD Area-
This is also a very important area. Finished product cutting
& packing done here. 5S activities are very much
necessary for
these areas.
There are also various areas where 5S activities required i.e. Powder
Grinding Mill area, Press Shop area, Area of Ovens, Sun Drying area,
ETP Area etc.
