 Tea Tree - it is known for its mild antiseptic and antifungal qualities and for being good

for the skin

 Lavender - lavender is great in just about everything - it's known for being good for the
skin and for repelling fleas and mosquitos
 Citronella - perhaps the most famous and widely-used mosquito repelling essential oil -
works for fleas too
 Peppermint - fleas don't like it...and it makes your dog minty fresh smelling!
 Cedarwood - blends well with the other oils, helps anchor the scent blend (as a base note
and repels fleas and mosquitoes
 Eucalyptus - known as a germicide and for its flea/mosquito repelling qualities - plus just
plain smells good
 Dry, Normal, or Oily Hair
 People with dry to normal hair will appreciate the conditioning properties that both
rosemary oil and chamomile oil offer in shampoo.
 Rosemary oil
 Rosemary works best with darker colored hair because it brings out red and brown
highlights. Rosemary oil moisturizes and makes brown hair soft and shiny. After cleaning
with natural, herbal rosemary shampoo, brunettes can rinse their hair with a solution of
half apple cider vinegar and half water. The apple cider vinegar is astringent and will
remove any build up or residue. Apple cider vinegar also brings out red and dark
highlights.
 Chamomile oil
 Chamomile works best with blonde hair. While gently moisturizing, chamomile brings
out yellow and blonde highlights. Instead of apple cider vinegar, blondes may wish to
rinse hair with a solution of half lemon juice and half water. The lemon juice will remove
soap residue and bring out blonde highlights.
 People with dry hair may want to use these rinses once per week, but too often may result
in drying out the hair.
 Cinnamon leaf oil
 This oil the herbal oil of choice for those with oily hair. Cinnamon leaf oil aids in
cleansing and is soothing to the skin in small quantities. Cinnamon leaf oil has been used
to combat dandruff, eczema, and minor skin irritations.

Bath and Beauty Soap and Shampoo - Anonymous

Make shampoo to control ingredients and qualities. Learn to make natural, organic, and biodegradable
shampoo for hair.

After mastering the basic skills necessary to make and mill soap, people can make their own
shampoo, as well. Benefits of making soap and shampoo include controlling the ingredients and
keeping personal care products natural, herbal, organic, biodegradable and cruelty free. Make the
solid shampoo base first, then finish making shampoo bars or liquid shampoo. This recipe for
shampoo can be altered for either oily or dry hair by adding oils from herbs.

Herbal Hair Shampoo Base Ingredients

 34 ounces grade B olive oil

 16 ounces coconut oil
 4 ounces castor oil
 7 ounces sodium hydroxide
 21 ounces cold water

Grade B olive oil is best because it is fattier than grade A olive oil which is intended for eating.
If grade B is hard to find, grade A olive oil will work.

Materials Needed to Make Natural Shampoo at Home

All soap and shampoo making tools should be kept separate from food preparation tools.

 Kitchen scale
 Two plastic pitchers (must be labeled "dishwasher safe")
 Soap pot
 Long handled wooden spoons
 Rubber spatula
 Two kitchen thermometers
 Large plastic container with lid
 Rigid plastic cutting board
 Old towel
 Sharp knife
 Rubber gloves
 Safety goggles

Sodium hydroxide is available in hardware stores, and is also called lye.

Lye and Safety

Lye is caustic. Before making shampoo, prepare your workstation by covering surfaces with old
newspaper or old towels. Wear protective rubber gloves and protective eye goggles. If lye
touches skin or eyes, flush immediately with cold water. If a burn ensues, contact a physician.

Preparing Lye for Shampoo Making

1. Place one empty, plastic pitcher on the kitchen scale and set to 0. Carefully add 7 ounces of
sodium hydroxide.
2. Use the same method to add 21 ounces cold water to the second pitcher.
3. Without splashing, gently pour the water into the lye, not the other way around.
4. Stir gently until all of the lye has dissolved.
5. The lye solution will be hot; its temperature should reach 150 - 200 degrees F.
6. Secure the lid and place pitcher in cold water bath in your sink or a large pot.
7. Use the lye when it has cooled to 95 degrees F.

Preparing Oil for Natural Shampoo

1. Place soap pot on kitchen scale and set to 0.

2. Measure the oils listed above into pot.
3. Place pot on stove and set on medium heat.
4. Stir as the oil warms; bring the oil to 95 degrees F.

Making Solid Shampoo Base

When both lye and oil are at 95 degrees F., remove oil from heat and:

1. Slowly pour the lye solution into the oil while stirring gently.
2. Stir the solution gently for fifteen minutes to an hour.
3. Look for "trailings," the visible drops of shampoo on top of the mixture that take a moment to
be incorporated back into the solution. Trailings can be hard to see, but after stirring for an hour
the solution is ready.
4. Pour the warm shampoo into a plastic container. Scrape all shampoo out of the pot with a
rubber spatula.
5. Secure lid and wrap mold in an old towel to keep it warm.

Open the mold every 12 hours and, if there is liquid on top, stir to mix. After 48 hours have
passed open the mold and let the shampoo continue to dry; it is still caustic.

After a few days the top of the shampoo will seem firm. Pull apart the sides of the mold then turn
the mold over on a cutting board and press the bottom to release the shampoo. (If no release, wait
another day or two.)

Once the solid shampoo base is hard enough to grate, it is time to finish the shampoo.

human hair. The ingredients are simple:

After the shampoo base has cured, move on to make Dog Shampoo.

Herbal Dog Shampoo Ingredients

The ingredients that make shampoo best for dogs are:

 2 drops Lemon Oil. Lemon Oil is extracted from lemon rinds. It is known for its astringent and
antiseptic properties. It helps control dandruff, and leaves fur shiny and soft.
 2 drops Lavender Oil. Lavender Oil is extracted from the flowers of the Lavender plant. Lavender
has been added to soaps and baths for centuries. Aromatherapists use lavender to treat stress
and anxiety. Lavender is used to treat minor skin irritations, such as eczema and acne.
 2 drops Cedarwood Oil. Cedar is a natural flea and tick repellent.
 2 drops Pennyroyal Oil or Peppermint Oil. Pennyroyal is a good flea, tick, and other insect
repellent. It contains a volatile oil, and should not be used on pregnant dogs, or by pregnant
women who are washing the dogs. Peppermint Oil is a safer alternative.

Add the above ingredients to one quart of liquid shampoo.

How to Make Liquid Dog Shampoo

Powdered pectin is added to liquid shampoo to prevent the shampoo from separating. The bottle
will still need to be shaken before washing the dog.

Dealing With Skin Sensitivity in Dogs

Having a dog with sensitive skin can be distressing and costly for the owner. Even a simple walk can
result in a hefty veterinary bill.

To make liquid shampoo, grate the shampoo base with a cheese grater. Then, stir in a pot over
medium heat:

 5 ounces grated shampoo base

 30 ounces water
 1/2 teaspoon powdered pectin.

Melt thoroughly, remove from heat and add:

 All of the dog shampoo oils listed above.

Stir to mix well, and pour shampoo into a large jug with a tight seal. Pour some of the shampoo
into a small plastic bottle to keep in the shower. Shake bottle before shampooing the dog.

Safety Tips

Keep dog shampoo making supplies separate from food preparation supplies. For example,
purchase two cheese graters. Use one for grating cheese, and the other for grating dog (or
human) shampoo base. Keep the shampoo making supplies in a separate cupboard or room so
they never get mixed up.

Natural Shampoo for People

Natural shampoo for people starts with the exact same base made with olive oil, coconut oil, and
castor oil. Different essential oils are added for different hair types.
