Congruent Segments:________________________________________________________

For instance, let’s say that you measure the lengths of two pencils and find that they have the same
length…we would call them congruent segments.
 Congruent segments can have different orientations, overlap, intersect, and even be in
different planes.
 Congruence refers only to length; it does not refer to orientation.
 To indicate segments are congruent, we use short tick marks.

Deciding whether segments on a coordinate plane are congruent

 For horizontal segments, subtract the x-coordinates

 For vertical segments, subtract the y-coordinates
Ordered pair: A pair of elements x and y from a set, written (x,y), where x is distinguished as first and y
as second.

The x-coordinate tells the distance right (positive) or left (negative).

The y-coordinate tells the distance up (positive) or down (negative).
