Elements of doing a work successfully - PDCA Cycle

Any work in any area can be performed successfully by applying PDCA cycle. PDCA stands for
PLAN, DO, CHECK & ACT.

P - Plan - Start of any work requires planning. Two things are to be planned.
1. Objective – A clear objective of work must be defined.
2. Procedure – A procedure to achieve the objective must be defined.

D - Do - Implement the procedure (Do the work).

C - Check - Measure, evaluate & Check the results against the objective.

A - Act - Now there may be two situations, act accordingly :


1. Objective achieved – If objective set in planning stage is achieved, continually
improve it.
2. Objective not achieved – If objective set in planning stage is not achieved, review
the planning stage. Either objective or procedure to be
suitably modified.
After this stage PDCA cycle is again implemented.

Elements of A Work

Any work in any area will have certain elements irrespective of its nature, however sometimes
some of the elements may not be applicable.

Main four elements & their importance in carrying out the work successfully are :

1. Man – The man performing the work should be with adequate knowledge of the work with
required skill, experience & training.

2. Method – The method of performing work should be standardized one & should be such as to
get the desired output in easiest & foolproof manner.

3. Material – The quality of input material must be good with required specifications & without
any processing problems

4. Machine – The required machine involved must be working all right without any problem with
high efficiency.
Getting the work done

Getting the work done successfully requires certain areas improved :

1. Communication – Clear communication of requirements, precautions etc. is necessary. In this


regard, nowadays visual methods are very popular to communicate effectively.

2. Training – If there is a new area, a training may be required.

3. Motivation – The person performing the work must be motivated. This is a tool to get the work
done with utmost spirits.

4. Discipline for involvement – The persons concerned must get involved in work (ownership),
they must not feel it as a burden. They must understand the requirements of work, then the work
would be executed smoothly.
