Management and Leadership

According to the DEX management has the following definitions :

 The work and art of leadership.


 Entire business organization, management and business management.
 Science and technology organization and management of an enterprise

Professional management is a function that it means to lead, in a given context, a


group of people who have reached a common objective, in accordance with the purpose
of the organization they belong.

The key elements of this general definition are : professional function are the
professional practice for the exercise of professional activity requiring knowledge and
specific skills, technical and relational.

In comparison with other functions and professions, the managerial function has
two own characteristics It can be exercised on other people (colleagues, associates,
superiors), so there is a solitary profession and it teaches not only in school like a
management university or something like that but especially in contact with the
reality/the practice.

To lead is the generic term that designates different management styles, but that
means, regardless of style, a team that must have the responsibility to achieve common
goals.

When we speak about a given context we refer to two aspects :

 economic, social, political with specific constraints and opportunities


 cultural characteristics, mentality, traditions, from the specific public
service institution they are part of.
This context is given and even if we want to change, to make it evolve this is
not possible at once. We have to consider and adapt management practices to the reality
that we are compelled to act.

To lead a group of people , we have to not confuse management with having


people in subordination.

Common objective, in accordance with the purpose of the organization. If an


organization are not always clearly defining their objectives, or if they are defined only
in the whole organization, and not at the level of each subassembly, it is absolutely
necessary like the objectives to be explicit in an operational manner.

The results of an organization depends on the manager. The management


activity is leading a group of people to achieve a common objective requires and relies
on the experience and talent manager.

For a long time it was considered that an effective management activity is


determined exclusively by his personal qualities, experience combined with insight,
originality, energy, power to convince , confidence, the fact that management is an art
because there are no case history for solving difficult situations in an organization,
making the most appropriate decisions in a context often ambiguous.

Practice shows that successful management is significantly improved when


grafted on the personal qualities and specific knowledge management. The evolution of
knowledge regarding management shows that this area has acquired the attributes of a
science, because we were in front of a systematic body of knowledge, methods and
techniques used in practical work contributes to enhance the effectiveness of an
organization.

Effective management is not a science but an art or art and science, because it
involves the use of personal qualities to adapt the knowledge, methods, techniques
specific to a determined context. In the daily practice of a manager are found both artistic
issues (most evident in the style of management) as well as scientific ones (in the
interpersonal, informational, decisional).

On the other hand we have the leadership which is a complex concept open to
subjective interpretations. Each intuitively understand the concept of leadership is
based on a variety of learning experiences, making them difficult to catch in one succinct
definition. Secondly, how leadership is defined and understood is strongly influenced by
that person's theoretical education. There are groups of people who see leadership as a
consequence of the characteristics of a leader, while other groups see the concept as a
social process that develops the relationship of a group. Such divergent views will result
in different opinions about the nature of leadership.
As a conclusion I think that leadership is included in management and that in
order to be a good leader you have to be also a good manager to know how to use your
resources both human and materials.
