• Estee Lauder-owned Origins has been committed to recycling since its US launch 16 years ago. The brand does
not use aerosols and opts for recycled materials including papers, cartons and packing materials.

• A study done in the UK showed that 98% of consumers believe that manufacturers need to do more to minimise
the amount of packaging they use

. International beauty powerhouses are buying into organic, environmentally conscious companies with a view
to expanding existing brands and including new ones to satisfy an 'enlightened' consumer (L'Oréal has acquired
The Body Shop and a stake in Sanoflore; Clarins has bought into Kibio, the French organic beauty company;
Estée Lauder owns Aveda).
Fact: Renewable and biodegradable materials are better for the environment.
Solution: Veja is a brand of fair-trade sneakers that uses organic cotton from northeastern Brazil and natural wild rubber,
which is renewable and biodegradable, from the Amazonian forest. About $130, Takashimaya, NYC.

Fact: Plastic products contribute to environmental waste.


Solution: SIGG Switzerland has set out to prevent this by offering aluminum sports bottles that are safe for the environment (and don't give

Fact: Our skin can soak up chemicals used in personal care products, which can then enter the blood stream.
Solution: European line La Fleur Organique offers items free of parabens, silicones, mineral oil, chemical preservatives,
synthetic fragrances, colorings, and petroleum derivatives. If that's not enough, the packaging is also recyclable. Hand
Nourishment, $15, leaves hands soft and smooth, and the Purifying Mask, $20, is a complexion-enhancing treatment.

Fact: According to the United States Department of Agriculture, approximately 55 million pounds of pesticides were
applied to approximately 12.8 million acres of cotton grown in the U.S. in 2003.
Solution: Levi's Eco jeans are made with 100 percent organically-grown cotton, so they don't contain potentially
harmful additives. The buttons are made of coconut shell, and the dye is from natural compounds like indigo. Plus,
organic fabric or recycled paper is used for the packaging to complement this eco-friendly product. Eco low-rise

Fact: Millions of trees have been cut down to produce paper shopping bags.
Solution: As an alternative, use a fabric bag like the Miss Marc nylon tote

Fact: Pesticides used on cotton can be very harmful.
