Amerigo Vespucci was born in Florence, Italy in 1454 to parents Elisabetta and Stagio. He had two older brothers and one younger brother. Vespucci went on his first expedition from Spain between 1499-1500 as the navigator, with the goal of disproving Christopher Columbus' claim that his second voyage reached Asia by showing that North and South America were separate land masses from Asia, leading to the two continents being named after Vespucci.
