Unity in Diversity Children’s Art Competition
2006

This year we have celebrated the essence of life and that is ‘Unity in Diversity Children’s
Art Competion 2006’. Children from the vibrant community of GTA gathered at Civic
centre in Mississauga for this ‘On the Spot’ Art Competition. Hopefully we will have this
event every year.

All of us have a rainbow of attributes within ourselves and this colourful rainbow unites
us in our personalities to create that one shining flame of everlasting sunshine, one spirit
that we all seek. That is how we want to see a blossoming Canada under the one sunshine
of Unity in Diversity, always celebrating the light and the rainbow at the same time and
with the same spirit.

This event has come up with the support of many. Mississauga Arts Council under the
leadership of Ms. Linda Thomas has been a backbone to us in organizing this event. Art
Unit of City of Mississauga has been behind us and encouraged us at every step. Learna
Education Inc. as our main sponsor helped us in organising this event. We received a lot
of support and congratulatory messages from many including community leaders, our
sponsors and volunteers. I extend my thanks to everybody.

I am honoured to have been invited to be a part of this exciting event. I

want to thank Meena Chopra and to acknowledge the Arts Council's
support of the work of Cross Currents.

We at the Arts Council strongly believe in the concept of promoting,

encouraging the bringing together the diverse cultures of our
community through the various forms of art. Cross Currents has made
this their vision; the search for a unifying factor which can be a
synergized focal point for laying a foundation for the growth of an
emerging strong and rich society of the future. As the umbrella
organization for the arts in Mississauga, the Arts Council processes the
grant dollars on behalf of the city of Mississauga. We promote,
educate, advocate and honour the excellence in our city. We are proud
of our artists and the talent within our community.

We live in a world filled with a wondrous diversity of experiences,

opinions, physical appearance, cultures, religion, etc. One of the
challenges of this age is not only to find a way to live in harmony with
people who differ from us, but to celebrate the diversity and learn from
it. We can only learn a limited amount from those who are like us but
there is a fortune of new knowledge to be gained from those who have a
different perspective to our own. The richness of cultural backgrounds
and experiences provides us with tremendous opportunities for a
wealth of cultural expression in the community.

Congratulations!

Linda Thomas
