Investigations
Year 6
Using and Applying
Number Strategies
to Real Life Situations
Instructions
• Work in alone or in a small group, no more than three.
• Read through the problems and choose one you would like to solve,
check with your teacher to see if they think it is suitable for your
group.
• Devise a plan to solve your problem and put the plan into action.
• Prepare a short oral presentation to explain to your class how you
solved your chosen problem. Your explanation must include
[1] Your original plan of how to solve the problem.
[2] A step by step guide of what you did to get your answer.
[3] Details of any changes to your original plan and why those
changes were made.
[4] A detailed explanation of all your working out.
• You may choose any medium to support your presentation (chart,
PowerPoint, Photostory, etc) however visual aids are strongly
recommended.
Our Chosen Problem
Do you have your own Measurement problem? Are
you rearranging your room? Designing furniture?
Designing clothing? Sports Equipment? Write
your own measurement problem here.

If we want to carry the brown table in

6AR through the 6AR door, how
large does the door need to be?
Our Plan..
Write your plan of how you will solve the problem here:

1. We will measure the table’s height, width. Next, we will have to

measure the door
Things we need:
Meter Stick
Working out the
answer…
We measured the door and the table, the results are in the next slide.
How did we work it out?
I had to measure the brown table.
The length:119cm
Height:90.5cm
Width:60cm
The Door:
Height:2m 8 cm
Length: 98cm
Our SolutionIf we want to
carry the brown table in
6AR through the 6AR door,
how large does the door
The door needs to be: need to be?
Height:100cm
Width:70cm
The results above are a bit higher and wider than the table because if
the door is as high as the table, the table would not fit in.

Expected Learning Outcomes RE FL EC T Comment

Accuracy
1. Did we choose the right tools? FL We chose a ruler That’s all
we needed.
2. Did we record all measurements with units. RE Yes
3. Did we calculate accurately? FL We record our answers as
accurately as we can.
Understanding
1. Did we convert the units when needed? EC We did not need to convert
any units.
Problem Solving Strategies
1. Did we creating a good plan and change it when FL We had a good plan.
needed?
2. Did we organise for different people to help or EC We did all in different times
complete different tasks.
3. Did we use estimation to help solve the problem? FL We did not really use
estimations skills, but we did
use estimation.
Problem 11
The distance around the perimeter of the running track is four
hundred meters. Each lane is 1 meter wide. The inter class
relay is coming! The fastest four runners from each class are
selected to compete in a relay. Each runner must complete
one lap of the track before passing the baton onto the next
runner. The grounds man must mark the start lines for each
different lane. If each team runs a total of four laps, show
where the grounds man should paint the start lines. Show the
distance between each starting line.

Problem 2
• The netting around the NIST sports field has become
worn to the point of letting balls go through into the
khlong and into the downstairs cafeteria. Mr. Simon
(Millward) has decided to replace all of it. If replacement
netting costs 350 baht per m², how much must Mr.
Simon allocate from the Phys. Ed. budget to complete
the job?
Problem 1
• The Varsity Boys Basketball Team complained that they
could not clearly see the outline of court number one
lines because of the colour they were painted. Coach
Randy decided to have the lines replaced with a special
highly visible tape. This tape costs 500 baht per metre.
How much does this replacement job cost?
Problem 3
• It has been decided to paint the top of our fire escape
stairs bright red so they are easy to recognize as the fire
escape. Only the top of each step will be painted. Steps
on all three floors, right to the bottom of the fire escape
will be painted. The area in between each flight of steps
will not be painted. Bright red paint costs $5.50 per litre
and one litre of paint will cover 3 square metres. How
much will it cost to paint the stairs?
Problem 4
On wet days the area outside year six classrooms gets
very slippery. For everyone’s safety it has been decided
to lay a row of non-slip tiles from the top of the stairs to
run the full length of the veranda. These tiles will replace
the large rectangular tiles but just in one row. The cost of
these tiles is $15 per square metre for the tiles and $3
per square metre to lay them? How much will it cost to
do this job?
Problem 5
• While I am cleaning a fish tank I decide to keep the goldfish in one
of our classroom K’nex boxes overnight. The water has to be
treated before I can add the goldfish or they will die. The instructions
on the purifying chemical tell me to add 10ml for every litre of water.
If I fill the K’nex box so the water level is 4cm from the top, how
much purifying chemical will I have to add?
Problem 6
How much water is in the rectangular ECC swimming pool?
Take note of the steps into the pool and be as accurate
as you can. Only measure the rectangular pool, not the
arch shaped pool.
Problem 8
Create a structure or sculpture out of empty
containers, so that when added up the
combined capacity of all the containers it
is 4.35 litres in total. The structure should:
• Be designed so that all the pieces are
fixed together to stand or hang in the room
• The completed structure/sculpture must
contain at least 4 containers
• Each container must be a different
capacity
Problem 9
The sports field will soon be replaced by a new ‘all
weather’ pitch that will be 0.75metres higher
than the current surface. How much fill and
concrete will need to be laid to make the new the
field the correct height?
Problem 10
Create a timetable for a trip around the world using 24
hour time. You must plan at least 3 trips
continuously.
• Name:
• Nationality on Passport:
• Location of Departure:
• Destination:
• Departure time:
• Arrival time:
• Flight time:
