Unpaired t-test
• In this case we consider 2 small samples i.e.
n<30 and we compare their average values

Sample1 Sample2
n1 n2
X1 X2
σ1 σ2

Unpaired t-test

σ12 = ∑ ( X1 – X1)2
n1-1

σ22 = ∑ ( X2 – X2)2
n2-1

Unpaired t-test

Combined variance = ∑ ( X1 – X1)22+∑ ( X2 – X2)22

n1-
1+n2-1

Combined S.D = √combined variance

S.E = σ √1 + 1
n1 n2

Unpaired t-test

T cal = X1 – X2
S.E

From the table value the degree of

freedom are given as (n1-1) + (n2-1)
= n1 + n2 -2

Example

Two groups of patients from hospitals 1 and 2

were taken and their increase in weights
introduced by a particular diet was studied.
Test at α = 5% whether there is any significant
difference in the weight increase for the two
groups.

Group 1 : 5 3 4 6 2
Group 2 : 4 8 5 2 6 5 3

Solution
Group 1(X1) (X1-X1)2 Group 2(X2) (X2-X2)2

5 1 4 0.49
3 1 8 10.89
4 0 5 0.09
6 4 2 7.29
2 4 6 1.69
5 0.09
3 2.89
20 10 33 23.43

X1 = 20/5 = 4

X2 = 33/7 = 4.7

Solution cont..
• H0: µ1 = µ2 (No difference)
• H1: µ1 = µ2 (There is a difference)

Combined variance = ∑ ( X1 – X1)2+∑ ( X2 – X2)2

n1-1+n2-1
= 10 +23.43
5-1+7-1
= 3.343

12/08/2021 Free template from www.brainybetty.com 8

Solution cont..
• Combined S.D = √combined variance
= √3.34
= 1.828

• S.E = σ √1 + 1
n1 n2
=1.07

12/08/2021 Free template from www.brainybetty.com 9

Solution cont..
• Tcal = X1 – X2
S.E
• = 4 – 4.7
1.07
= 0.654
α = 5% , 2 tail test
d.f. = 5-1 + 7 – 1 = 10
Ttab = 2.228

Conclusion
• Since Tcal < Ttab we accept Ho and conclude
that there is no significant difference between
average wt. increase for the 2 groups.
