Soil Remediation: Overview

• Impacted soils exist on relatively small portion of site

• Primary Contaminants
o Perchlorate
o Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
 Trichloroethylene (TCE)
 Perchloroethylene (PCE)

• Remediation strategy based on:

o High priority removal actions
 Depleted Uranium (DU)
 Unexploded Ordinance (UXO)

o Remedial Action Plan (Perchlorate and VOCs) that considers

 Current site conditions
 Future site use
Soil Remediation: Approach
• Initiate high-priority removal actions

• Test VOC removal strategies

o Soil vapor extraction
o Carbon treatment prior to discharge

• Test deep soil (41 to 200 feet) remediation strategies (perchlorate)

• Develop site-wide remedial action plan

o Considers results from OU1 remediation and site-wide pilot testing
o Consider contaminant depth (“Shallow” and “Deep”)
o Considers current and future conditions

• Implement site-wide remedial action plan

o Excavate / Screen / Segregate soils
o Consolidate soils consolidated at central location in lined, engineered
treatment cells

• Remove landfill debris: to off-site Class I or II facility
