Creating an Electric Motor

Purpose: To create a rotating motor out of the materials given

Equipment: Magnet 2 Safety Clips Pre-cut Magnet Wire

Sand Paper Electrical Tape
Cell Battery Scissors

Procedure:
Using your knowledge of electric and magnetic fields, attempt to make the wire
rotate. If no success is achieved, follow the steps below.

1. Attach a safety pin on either side of the battery (+ and – sides) using electrical
tape.
2. Wrap the magnet wire around something thick, such as a dry-erase marker. Be
sure to leave about a 5 cm length of wire uncurled from both ends.
3. Sand both ends of the wire in order to expose the wire and remove the protective
coating.
4. Place the magnet in between the safety pins; in the middle of the battery.
5. Place the wire in between the safety pins. Flick the wire; it should rotate. If not,
adjust and try again.

Data:

Length of side of wire: 2cm

Analysis:

1. Describe what you did to the wire in order to make it part of your motor.

2. How did you interrupt or change the flow of current in your setup in order to make it
work?

3. Describe three ways you could make the motor turn faster.

4. Assume that your coil is square with the side length of 2 cm and pick one side 90
degree from the point of rotation. Calculate the amount of force on that side of the coil
when it is perpendicular to the table assuming that the magnetic field is 3T and the
current traveling through the wire is 800 mA.
5. Calculate the torque on that same side of the coil when it is parallel to the table.

Conclusion:
Since Derek and I were absent on the day of the lab, we both had to work on it
together. We couldn’t really figure out what to do, as we didn’t really understand how the
wire was supposed to rotate until Mr. Boschman showed us, and gave us hints. Once we
were shown how to build it, we gained understanding of why the motor would be built in
that manner. It was more challenging for the both of us to complete this lab in relation to
the rest of the class because we did not have as many minds to work with.
