PARTS OF THE BRAIN

BRAINSTEM - “unconscious brain”

- located in the lower part of your brain (hindbrain)

- its role is to take care of the organs of your body
- it controls vital body processes and involuntary actions
- it maintains the activities within the interior of your central nervous system

Segments:
1. MEDULLA OBLONGATA
- a.k.a. spinal bulb
- extends down from the central part of the brain and connects to the spinal cord
- it is very small but it performs basic life functions like regulation of heartbeat,
breathing, and contraction of blood vessels

Your medulla oblongata can keep you ALIVE even with

damaged cerebrum and cerebellum!!!

BRAINSTEM

Segments:
2. PONS
- connects the medulla oblongata and the cerebrum
- contains the motor conduction paths between the cerebral cortex and cerebral
hemisphere

Damage to this part may cause PARALYSIS!!!

3. MIDBRAIN
- a short segment of your brainstem just above the pons; lies beneath the cerebrum
- serves as a pathway of nerve fibers leading to various areas of the brain and the
spinal cord
- contains major relay and reflex centers
- reflex actions of the eye, such as blinking, opening and closing the pupil, and
focusing the lens
- controls auditory reflexes, such as adjusting the ear to the volume of sound
- controls pain, temperature, and touch
PARTS OF THE BRAIN

Distinct Regions of the Brainstem:

THALAMUS

- highest segment of the brainstem

- a relay center for sensory impulses on their way to the cerebral cortex
- it receives optic nerves and directs impulses to the cortex for interpretation
- it also screens stimuli to prevent sensory overload

HYPOTHALAMUS

- it controls important sensations involved in maintaining homeostasis

(temperature balance, water balance , blood pressure) hunger, thirst
- makes us show different emotions
- it also regulates the release of many hormones
PARTS OF THE BRAIN

THE LIMBIC SYSTEM - controls our most deep-seated

drives and emotions

AMYGDALA
- an almond-shaped mass of gray matter, one in each hemisphere
of the brain, associated with feelings of fear and aggression and
important for visual learning and memory

HIPPOCAMPUS
- a curved ridge of tissue in each cerebral hemisphere of the brain
- concerned with basic drives, pleasure, and short-term memory
