Angular representation of a data

point by using a colored dial.

Step 1 : Create a dial as shown in picture (Using, powerpoint, adobe, paint etc) and save it as a JPEG.
Step 2 : Open Excel and Insert the saved picture into the Excel workbook as shown below.

2
Step 3: Create a table as shown “SAMPLE DATA TABLE”. We will be creating a PI chart out of the the values in cells D10:D12
Step 4: Cell D10 = F4*180-3 (F4 Contains the Data point that needs to be reprented on the colored dial)
Step 5: Cell D11 = 3 (This is simply the area of the needle on the PI chart – can be changed as desired)
Step 6: Cell D12 = 360-SUM(D10,D11) (This is the rest of the area on PI chart)

With this, we have the data ready to create our PI Chart and super impose it on the DIAL that we inserted in Step 2.

3
Step 7: Create a PI chart with the data in cells D10,D11 and D12.
Step 8: The small RED portion is the actual needle that represents the position of the DATA point on the Dial.
Step 9: The blue section is the angular representation of the data point (40% in this case)

4
Step 10: Right Click on the Chart area > Select “Format Plot Are”> Set “Sngle of first slice” to 270
Step 11: Change the color of the blue and green blocks to white by clicking on each block and changing their color to white.

5
Set color of Green Area to
White, set “Transparency”
slider to 100% as shown
in Image to the left

Repeat the same with the

Blue Area

Now change the

color of Red Needle
to Black

6
Right click on the white space in
the chart box and select “Format
Chart Area”

Select “FILL” and slide the

“Transparency” bar to 100%

With this, we have the needle

all set to be superimposed on
the dial that we inserted in
step1.

Drag this Chart over the image

to the right and adjust it (by
resizing or repositioning it)

7
Select the Graph plot area and then by holding the
“CTRL” key, also select the image and then Right click
and select “Group”.
8
Finally, drag the Pi chart over the image and the Dial
Representation is complete.

The Dial is now ready to be copied into any presentation

application (Ex: power point, word)
