What is area? Area is the amount of surface in a shape It is measured in square units What is a square unit?

A system used to measure area

Area of a Rectangle A= BH A- Area B- Base H- Height

Example:

The base equals 8 square units The height equals 8 square units Therefore Area= 6x8 (bxh) Area= 48

Area of a Triangle

Example:

Base= 11 (8+3) Height= 7 A= x 11 x 7 Area= 38.5

Area of a Circle

Area= Pi (3.14) x radius squared

Example:

A= Pi x radius squared A= Pi x 4^2 A= 50.26 Remember: If a question asks to leave in terms of Pi, do not multiply by pi. Example: 16pi

Practice Questions Now lets see if you can put your new information to work! 1. A rectangle has a base of 19 inches and a height of 12 inches. What is the area? A= __________ inches 2. If the area of a rectangle is 96 yd^2, and the height is 12 yd, how many yards is the base? B= __________ yards

3. If the radius of a circle equals 3 inches, what is the area? A= __________
