A MAJOR increase in raids against fuel laundering plants in the past three years is likely to cause significant damage to dissident republicans, an organised crime expert says. Customs officers have

quadrupled raids against the plants since 2008/09 and dissident republicans are now thought to be the only paramilitary groups involved in the racket. Former Assets Recovery Agency chief, now international crime consultant, Alan McQuillan,

says the strategy is likely to seriously hurt dissident finances. The news comes after unconfirmed reports that HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has been bringing in specialist teams from Great Britain to help clamp down on the operations.

In 2008/09 five laundering plants were disrupted in Northern Ireland, a Freedom of Information request by the News Letter revealed. Raids more than tripled to 16 in 2009/10 and rose further to 20 last year. Turn to page 12
