Senior representatives of the Orange Order, accompanied by unionist MLas, prepare to lay a wreath at the Carson Statue in the Stormont piCTUre: Colm Lenaghan/pacemaker estate ahead of the centenary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant
SATURDAYS Covenant centenary commemorations are about much more than the Loyal Orders, a leading Orange Order figure has said. Grand Chaplain the Rev Mervyn Gibson said the day would be a communitywide celebration and has appealed to
everyone on parade to act with dignity. We are out to celebrate something that was actually the birth certificate of Northern Ireland. We want everybody involved to have a good day, he said. Its not about the Orange Order, the Loyal Orders even, on Saturday. Its about the whole community celebrating the Ulster Covenant. The Rev Gibson said respect was a two-
way process and he called for respect to be shown towards the marchers. Certainly, we will be appealing for calm on all sides and respect to be shown to everyone. The appeal for a dignified approach came as the Orange chaplain revealed a recent rule change allowing its members to engage in direct talks with republicans on parading issues. See pages 6, 7 & 18
