Embedded systems are becoming more and more complex & so is the stillest of an embedded engineer. Gray string ham & Robert oshana, speakers at embedded system conference 2010, spoke on how the market demand & the culture are driving the skillset requirements of an embedded engineer. The definition of embedded system has broadened over the years.The initial defition said that an embedded system is anything

that is application-specific,but,today,an embedded device like a mobile phone can do much more than just calling-it can play FM radio,click pictures & so on. Whatever be the additional feature, An embedded system will always be resourcecontrained.The challenge to design.With limited input/output (I/O) will always be ther,says Robert oshawa,direction of software research & development, networking & multimedia group,freescale semiconductor. Embedded engineers always need to optimize what they are doing, unlike destop engineers who can push more memory or more processing speed, There are many examples of pure embedded devices,& of

larger system built using multiple embedded world is outside the destop world, where pressing the ONbutton will not boot the system. An embedded engineer needs to be an ALL-ROUNDER.He has to understand the hardware, how it interacts with the environmemt, how to use contrls, sensors & actuators,& how to integrate all together,says Oshawa. Todays education system will teach you either hardware in electrical engineering or software in computer science.Even the computer engioneering courses donot cover embedded systems completely.Embedded engineers need a broader set of educational qualication.one thing that is really important is hands-on training.you need to

take up as many projects as possible to gain expertise in an area,shares oshana.multiple projects will give you varied experience,increasing your analytical skills.choosing the right set of project is very important.IF I see a list of project like project in audio,project in power electronic etc.The project need to be similar nature or using similar components.oshana says,It depends on the application area. in field like defence,the of years are longer,the projects run longer. It really is cosumer driven,oshana adds.
