Around $17,000 will be filtering into Portage School Division Basic French classrooms following a successful grant application to the French As A Second Language Revitalization Program earlier this year. Strategic Initiatives Learning Coordinator Donna Mueller explains teachers were instrumental in attaining the grant, and they'll play an even more important role in using it. (Voice feed) Mueller says they've identified three major areas of focus including teacher development and increased cultural opportunities for students. (Voice Feed)

The grant is funded equally by the Federal and Provincial government and will be distributed in quarterly installments based on feedback provided by the Portage School Division. What this grant will mean for teachers is more resources available for basic french instruction. For students it will mean better access to effective learning methods, more field trips and more information available on the benefits of learning a second language. Mueller adds students and parents can expect more information to become available in the near future, noting she's optimistic about the program and

confident it will bring plenty of positive results
