Introduction
INTRODUCTION Through your experience in the kitchen, you might know what happens to an egg when you place it into boiling water or food coloring. However, you probably never followed a recipe that instructed you to leave an egg sitting overnight in a solution. You have a good reason to do just that in this experiment. If you submerge an egg in different solutions for 24 hours, you can observe how substances enter and leave the egg. The outcome may not be as tasty as your previous activities with eggs but the results certainly will give you food for thought, but I have chosen this experiment because I love seeing things and maybe even YOU :) !

Key Vocubulary
CELL The basic structural and functional unit of an organism that is capable of independent functioning. A cell consists of one or more nuclei, cytoplasm, and various organelles, all surrounded by a semipermeable cell membrane. CHEMICAL REACTION The process in which substances undergo chemical changes, forming new substances with different properties. CONCENTRATION The strength of a solution. GRAM A basic measurement unit of weight or mass used in the metric system (equal to the weight of one cubic centimeter of distilled water at 4C.) MASS The quantity of a sample of matter (or more precisely, the samples weight divided by acceleration due to gravity.) OSMOSIS The movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane from an area of higher

SOLUTION A mixture of two substances where one has dissolved into the other. Frequently (but not necessarily) a solution is a liquid.

Hypothesis
1. I Predict that in vinegar, the egg will gain mass, because the vinegar has a higher concentration of water than the egg so through the process of the osmosis the water will move into the egg and raise its mass. 2. I Predict in corn syrup, the egg will lose mass because the corn syrup has a lower concentration of water than the egg so through the process of the osmosis the water will move out the egg and lower its mass. 3. I Predict in Salt Water, The egg will gain mass because the salt water has a higher concentration of water than the egg so through the process of osmosis the water would move into the egg and raise its mass.

The egg will loose all its calcium, because eggs contain something called "calcium carbonate. This is what make it hard, vinegar is an acid known as acetic acid. When calcium carbonate (The egg) and acetic acid (Vinegar) combine a chemical reaction takes place, and carbon dioxide (A Gas) is released. This is what the bubbles released .The chemical reaction happening until the egg is used up. When I took the egg out of the vinegar, it was soft, because all of the carbon dioxide floated out of the egg into bubbles. Now as you put the egg in the syrup it will finally burst.
