emails – are being tackled effectively by the Cyber Crime Cell,
provided the victim is willing to take it that far, says Petlee Peter
■ Last year was hell for 27-year-old Auxi-
lian Michael. An anonymous email bad-
mouthing him has been pinging the inbox-
es of his friends, colleagues and bosses.
The contents of the mails traumatised the
young man, who even considered quitting
his job at one point of time. A formal police
complaint sealed the matter after the law
tracked down the anonymous stalker.
■ Repeated SMSes with lewd comments
bothered 23-year-old Nisha Menon for al-
most two months. Annoyed by the texts,
she changed her mobile number but the
messages still kept coming. Cops tracked
the SMSes to a colleague who was angry
over her promotion.
■ Freelance writer Krithika S.G. walked
to the police station to lodge a complaint
against a stranger who was calling her re-
peatedly and talking trash. The trouble
stopped after the khakis tracked the mis-
creant in two days’ time.

hese are some people who have been
targeted by virtual stalkers, mostly
troublesome individuals who target
people, known or unknown, in order
to seek cheap thrills out of it. The act most-
ly drives the victim into mental trauma and
agony till he or she figures out who the
stalker is.
Police sources in the city say nearly 90
percent of the victims are women, targeted
mainly via SMS. “I can point out several
women who have suffered problems due
to SMSes and calls from anonymous per-
sons. In one of the cases where the culprit
was caught it was known that he had
dialled a random number from his mobile
phone and when he heard a female voice
on the other end he kept calling and
SMSing repeatedly,” says Nithya Kalyani, a
team leader with a top BPO. “I can tell by
experience that the affected person must
approach their peers and later the police if
they want to find a solution to their prob-
lem,” she adds.

Year: 1999
I was around 21 years old then and had just
started working. There were no mobile phones
and the land phone at home was where people
contacted me. I started getting anonymous calls
every day at home – at least twice a day and
something at the most unearthly hours. The caller
would ask for me, and say things like ‘I like you’,
‘I want to marry you’, etc.
Initially, I thought it was a prank from an old
college mate, but then the calls started coming
more often. If my parents had attended the calls,
then she would want to know my whereabouts.
The frequent calls started getting annoying and
my parents too were upset about this ‘friend’ of
mine.
I hail from an orthodox family and it became
urgent to trace the stalker. After three months of
tormenting, we decided to trace the caller. We
installed a caller id and traced the number.
To our shock we discovered that the caller was
one of our family friend’s daughter. That made it
more difficult to confront the caller. One day my
elder sister went to her house but on the pretext
of finding if the girl was mentally affected.
We discovered that she was not a psycho and it
was just an infatuation. My parents were also
thinking if they could approach the family for an
alliance for myself. Somehow all of us were not in
acceptance for the girl.
We had to put an end to this episode and so we
explained everything to the girl’s father. This is
the most tormenting of incidents I faced. Today,
the girl is married and well settled, but I cannot
forget such a fanatic caller.

Who was it?
T his incident is a couple of month old. I was getting calls from an
unknown number and the moment I answered the call, the person
on the other end would disconnect it.
The person also sent SMSes like ‘I have seen you’, ‘I like you’ and
‘Can I make friendship with you’.
At first I thought it was a prank played by my friends. But later, the
whole thing got so irritating that the calls and messages got very
nasty.
I told my husband and my friend about the annoying calls. I tried to
call the person, but he never answered my number.
The matter became serious and it looked like someone was following
me all the time. I opened my mind to my friend, who at first took it
lightly. But when I told him about the mental trauma I am facing he
decided to deal with this anonymous caller.
The next day itself the anonymous person stopped calling me. I don’t
know what magic my friend has done, but I guess guys can handle it
more amicably.

I had this caller who disturbed me for an entire week. One day he
called and asked for a person’s details. I disconnected the call telling
him to check the number. After half an hour he called to apologise
for the previous call. I said ok and ended the call. Again, the same
evening, he called and said he got my phone number scribbled on a
wall in a bus stand and threatened that many may call and disturb
me. I was irritated and told him to mind his business. To make sure I
don’t answer his calls, I saved the number as ‘Ignore’ in my mobile.
But that didn’t really help. He kept on calling and that made me
more frustrated. After two days he called from a different number.
To put an end to this, I made a male colleague call the person from
his mobile. When my friend called, the man started blabbering.
Finally my friend gave a final warning and the caller never called.

Amdocs buys Ireland’s
Changingworlds
Dublin-based Changingworlds, a mobile phone services firm
that counts Vodafone and Sprint among its customers, said
late on Wednesday it had been bought by New York-listed
Amdocs for US$ 60 million. The deal is likely to trigger a
multi-million dollar windfall for co-founders Barry Smyth,
who is still its chief scientist, and Paul Cotter, who spun the
company out of University College Dublin in 1999. Amdocs
will also pay US$ 11.6 million to Irish private equity group
TVC Holdings , which invested seed capital in Changingworlds
in 2000. That figure, which could grow to $16.4 million, is 3.7
times TVC’s original investment.

Lankan forces capture strategic
area in LTTE stronghold
Sri Lankan Army on Thursday captured a strategic area
in the rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi following three
days of intense fighting and attacked LTTE bunkers
elsewhere in the embattled north of the country, the
defence ministry said. The attack at Kilinochchis
strategic Akkarayankulam forward lines was
undertaken by troops attached to the Sri Lanka Light
Infantry (SLLI), Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) and the
Gajaba Regiment (GR) in the 571 Brigade under 57
Division, it said. “After fighting bitter battles with the
Tigers for three consecutive day and night, the army
finally captured the entire Akkarayankulam built-up
territory,” the army said.

Spain because his pacifist positions have put his life in
danger in the Middle East, a source close to his
entourage said on Wednesday. “He does not feel safe
there. That is why he has applied for asylum,” the
source, who was not authorised to speak publicly about
the case, told AFP. Omar, 28, made the request on
Monday immediately after he arrived at Madrid’s
Barajas airport on an Eygpt Air flight from Cairo, where
he currently lives with his British wife Zaina Alsabah bin
Laden, 52, formerly known as Jane Felix-Browne.

Now, Nepal to ban ‘smoking
in public places’
Close on the heels of the anti-smoking law coming
into force in India, Nepal has decided to ban
smoking in public places. “Places for smoking will
be designated. If anyone smokes outside such
designated places he or she will be fined. We’re
soon bringing a law to this effect,” the
‘nepalnews.com’ quoted Deputy PM and Home
Minister Bamdev Gautam as saying. In fact, the
Supreme Court had ordered the Nepalese
government two years ago to formulate laws to ban
smoking in public places in Nepal where nearly 49
per cent of men and 29 per cent of women puff.

Locals play host to tourists
in new tourism project

I
t is a different kind of tourism
in the small hamlet in the
mountainous region of Hima-
chal Pradesh where the villag-
ers play host to tourists.
Launched by the Tourism Min-
istry in tie-up with UNDP in Nag-
gar panchayat of Kullu district,
the project aims to use tourism as
a base to improve livelihood of
villagers and also to provide a
unique interactive experience for
visitors with local communities.
“‘Explore Rural India’, involves
tourists stay in the house of vil-
lagers to enjoy the local custom
and tradition. Ever since it was
launched the number of visitors
has gone up”, said Sudha Devi,
Deputy Commissioner, Kullu.
“This has resulted in the increase
in the income of the locals” she
added.
Situated 6108 ft above the sea
level and 22-km away from Kullu
district headquarters, Naggar
now has 30 houses converted as
“Home Stay” with clean toilets,
kitchen and bedrooms for tour-
ists. Government has given Rs
30,000 as subsidies to the house
owners to improve their house-
hold aminities under the Home
Stay scheme. Thirty more house
owners have come forward to
avail the subsidies under the
scheme.
While Tourism Ministry has
given a grant of Rs 50 lakh for the
project, the UNDP has contribut-
ed Rs 20 lakh.
“The panchayat has got a face-
lift through the project”, said
Pushpa Sharma, Mahila Mandal
Pradhan of the village.
Naggar is one of the 36 sites se-
lected across the country by the
Tourism Ministry in close coor-
dination with the UNDP. “The
development of heritage sites,
roads, pathways, signage and
street-lighting through solar
power are being undertaken un-
der this project,” said Sudhir Sa-
hi, National Consultant of UNDP.
"Eleven Self-Help Groups
(SHG), village panchayat, village
development committee and ma-
hila mandal are involved in the
activities," he said. “We are set-
ting up an interpretation centre
by renovating an existing heritage
building called Gol Sarai in the
panchayat. Here the visitors will
have first hand access to materi-
als pertaining to local tourism
site including art and craft, tradi-
tional cuisine etc,” said Sahi.
“Besides, the centre will pro-
vide equipments for adventure
sports like para-gliding, river raft-
ing, trekking and camping,” he AP

that, human beings are working with
limited individualistic ambition. Instead
of working with ambition, if people work
for a deeper vision of life for themselves and
for everything around them then there is no
need to scale anything down.
And also when you do this, your ambitions
would never be in conflict with anybody else’s
vision too because fundamentally all human
beings are working for human well-being.
It is just that the scale of how we handle
human well-being may be different from per-
son to person. For one person, human well-
being may just mean his well-being.
For another person it may mean him and his
family. For another person it may mean him
and his community, or him and his nation,
him and his race, or him and his religion or for
another person it may mean the whole of hu-
manity. There is nobody on this planet who is
not concerned about human well-being; there
is only the difference in the scale of concern.
So, if every human being instead of working
work with a vision for well-being as a whole
then there is no need to scale down anything.
Either way you search for well-being; all I am
saying is why you are stingy about your desir-
es? Why don’t you be magnanimous? Why
don’t you be infinite in your desires? It is not
just about ‘I want to be well.’ I want you to be
really greedy about your ambition and desire
and say: I want the whole world to be well. I
want the whole existence to be well. I want all
life to be well.
Whatever is your ambition for yourself, ex-
tend that to the whole of humanity or to all life
forms on this planet. Then there is no need to
scale it down.
Ambition has become a problem only be-
cause it is limited. If you scale it up to its ulti-
mate level then ambition is a spiritual process
and a process of liberation.
Right now ambition is a process of entangle-
ment only because you keep it small. If you
take it up to its ultimate possibility, become
absolutely, utterly ambitious, then you be-
come spiritual too.■

tricks that could help make air
travel more pleasant such as:
• Chew gum, suck on candy,
drink liquid or yawn vigorous-
ly during the descent, to stim-
ulate swallowing and equalize
pressure in the middle ear.
• We swallow less when
asleep, so children often wake
up crying when the plane be-
gins to descend due to the un-
comfortable build-up of
pressure in their ears. Parents
can prevent their child’s dis-
comfort by waking them at the
start of the descent.
• Place a pacifier or bottle in
an infant’s mouth during take
off and landing, to encourage
the baby to swallow.
• Avoid flying with an ear in-
fection, or when congested
due to a sinus infection, a cold
or an allergy attack.
• If there is nasal congestion
and flying is unavoidable, it
can be treated with pseudoe-
phedrine and/or a deconges-
tant nasal spray before take

er competing cities, Tokyo is
worried that the charismatic Obama
may give Chicago an advantage.
“Mr. Obama is popular and good
at speeches, so things could get
tough for Japan,” said the senior Japa-
nese Olympic Committee board mem-
ber Tomiaki Fukuda. “I have a sense of
crisis.” Other bid cities were less anxious.
Malcolm Munro, spokesman for the Ma-
drid bid, congratulated Obama for his
victory, but said all four cities had
strengths that would make them attrac-
tive to IOC voters. “Whilst things like po-
litical support are obviously important,
we hope at the end of the day that the
decision is made simply on which is the
best city to host the Olympics,” he said.
History favours Chicago
History has shown, though, that an
Olympic bid benefits when its country’s

time, travelled to Singapore in 2005 to

“But I think that it’s not going to be won
from the position of who is the best ora-
tor. I think it’s going to be won on the
fact that the country has a new leader
and on the fact that his roots are in the
actual city of the bid, like Chicago is for
Obama.”
Obama supported the bid when Chi-
cago was still vying to be the United
States’ candidate city, long before he be-
came a presidential candidate. He taped
a video message shown to a USOC eval-
uation committee. Last June, he spoke at
a rally in Chicago after the city was
named a finalist for the 2016 Games. He
told the crowd that he lived two blocks
from Washington Park, the proposed site
for the Olympic Stadium. “I have to let
you know that in 2016, I’ll be wrapping
up my second term as president,” he
said to cheers. He added that he could
not think of a better way to wrap up that
second term than by marching into
Washington Park “as president of the
United States and announcing to the
world, ‘Let the Games begin!’” ■

album Keeps Getting’ Better: A Decade of

is pretty different, as she has experimented
with a unique style.
“With my last album, I had music that was
very ’20s, ’30s and ’40s, and was very de-
tailed and part of a very specific genre and
sound, but with this new album, I wanted
to go in a completely opposite direction –
a very futuristic, robotic sound and com-
puter-sounding vocals,” Just Jared quot-

“I’m experimenting with my voice in
ways I’ve never done before, almost
like a technical, computer-generated
sound, which is different for me be-
