Janelle Mone

This self-styled space cadet mixes soul, sass and sci-fi. Hannah Beesley listens up.
Introducing the next generation of diva: theatrical, funky and just the right side of eccentric. Im an alien from outer space, Janelle Mone announces on the opening line of her debut album, Metropolis: The Chase Suite. Her sound is a potent mix of cabaret, hiphop, rock and soul, while her presence is akin to Lauryn Hill and Andr 3000 performing in a space-age speakeasy. The quirky songstress describes her music as a little bit of re, with a little bit of ancient ashes. But its not just her sound causing a stir; her futuristic-rockabilly uniform and afro-pompadour do have set fashion tongues wagging. Mone moved from humble beginnings in Kansas City to Atlanta, where she co-founded the label/movement The Wondaland Arts Society with the intention of producing art, and helping to alter history. She was spotted on the Atlanta gig circuit by Outkast, before Sean Combs signed her to his label, Bad Boy Records, declaring her one of the most important signings of my career ... a true visionary. Mone has since received critical acclaim, with a 2009 Grammy nomination, and has her ngers in other artistic pies, including a guest appearance with the Atlanta Ballet in 2008. When shes not changing the world, Mone can be found writing poetry and playing golf Im brushing up on my game. And as for what her next creative step will be? Im a bit of a time traveller, so I dont know what my next mission will be, she says.
