Inspection of piston rings

1. Check for free movement of the piston rings 2. Check for the ring clearance 3. Inspect for any wear, stepping and scuffing

Renewal of piston rings

After inspecting the piston rings if they are worn they would have to be replaced but if they a reusable they can be used on the piston. 1. Remove the worn piston rings using the piston ring tool. NB. This tool can be used for re-installing new rings 2. Clean out the piston ring grooves using a cleaning solvent(kerosene or diesel oil) 3. Do another inspection with special attention to the grooves for any defects 4. Place rings inside cylinder and then use feeler gauge to measure the gap with the liner. 5. Insert the lowest ring first then check ring to land clearance. 6. After properly installing the ring coat the piston assembly with oil and insert it into the cylinder bore. 7. Position the rings so the gaps of each successive ring are on the alternative side and the gaps are inline with the piston pin bosses. 8. Use piston ring compressing tool to compress the rings evenly.
