Grade 3 Weekly Update Week of January 30, 2012

Unit of Inquiry

Language Arts

We are so excited for the Art Exhibition Thursday (February 2nd)! If you are available, please join us at 8:30 in the Heizhaus that morning. The students are eager to show the efforts off their hard work! This week we will begin to practice the talking points that the students will present to their audiences. As a reminder, your child should be dressed as their artist. Feel free to use your imagination if an artist picture is not available. It should be something that they can change into and out of quickly on their own. On the 2nd the students should come already dressed for the show, but they should bring clothes for recess if necessary. Thank you for supporting our young artists this week! We hope you will learn much at the show! We continue with inferences in reading. Inferring is using clues to make predications and draw conclusions. For example: The girl asked for a second bowl of cereal for breakfast. From this, I can infer that the girl is still hungry. In writing we are focusing on sentence fluency. Take some time to have your child read with you, to hear the sentence fluency. In addition, we are working on more specific word choice, emphasizing adjectives and adverbs to describe nouns and verbs. We are finishing up our unit on division (to be continued in the spring) and will soon be beginning fractions. Try to look for fractions in the real world with your child. Cooking together is a great application. Remember to keep one copy of the progress report and sign and return the other with the portfolio by next Monday. The ES Student Council is running a penny drive where you can donate your spare change until February Break. The proceeds will go to buy recreation equipment for a local orphanage. Thanks for your support!
